Habs Season Thread: 2024-25 Regular Season

The thing with Gallagher is, despite some like legoalie thinking otherwise, it was so easy to predict. The same way a second contract for running backs in the NFL almost never works out, everyone should have known that giving Gallagher that contract was a bad idea.
very business like thinking.....but there is a human element to all this. He's a warrior and will never back down. Maybe compensation for previous work.

The worst kind of contract is the one where you reward a player for what he used to be able to do as opposed to what he can realistically be expected to do for you in the future. You don't resign these guys for big money and long term, you dump them.

I think, with certain exceptions, Habsfans are patient. More specifically, they're willing to be patient if a rebuild is done correctly.

Who isn't patient, however, are many of the old dinosaurs in the media. There were plenty of them that said before last year's draft, alright cool, now we can start trying to make the playoffs!

CH1 is also right: You can't keep getting top-5 picks and coming out with disappointing players. End result has to be, we need to get an elite talent in some of them or at the very least, players that might not be worth the selection spot, but carve out good and long careers with us. You can't have more Galchenyuk/Kotkaniemi picks where they're playing hockey in their mid-20s elsewhere.

Right now, we only have one elite talent in the whole organization: Cole Caufield. There needs to be at least 1-2 more years of tanking, get one of Celibrini/Eiserman and one of Misa/Hagens in 2025, now we're talking.
And McKenna

Definitely wanted him traded before signing.

Luckily our first rounders are terrible so the cap situation will be fine.

And if you feel the loyalty just give them a post career job where the cap doesn't apply

Unfortunately.

If there wasn't a cap, nobody would care how much Gallagher's getting paid.

The cap requires GMs to be very cut-throat and manage players much differently.

But since it's the current reality...

why don't we just lose permanently, never try to win, we can get every top player around, but never play them, but damn we will win a HF Boards competition for best prospect pool

Robidas Island his ass.

We all knew the last 3-4 years of his contract were going to hurt. They paid him retroactively because he was a steal at 4.5m and 30g.
correction ......the entire contract hurt 5 minutes after signing

Too easy to predict for Gally

At least an NFL cap can be manipulated and they dont work with AAV

They restructure all the time something you cant do in the NHL

We’re trying to win. We’re just not good enough presently to do so. The way to win more regularly is to acquire better players, typically by drafting them. Better players players are typically drafted high. My point: there aren’t any shortcuts, unless you’re the NYR.

Players talk...best management scenarios can certainly attract higher grade free agents, how you treat your "assets" ..no?

LOL You have a dose of "Hindsight is 20/20", there is NO WAY that anyone of you knew that Gally would be injured every year since he signed the contract .. if you think that I call BS ..

Habs have always been known for treating their players first class - no expenses spared.

Recall Covid lock down playoffs - so many reports of players from every team drooling with jealousy about the way Habs players were setup - food spread, entertainment options and level of pampering Habs players received vs almost every other team including NYR players.
