May as well do a Carolina/Ottawa preview thread …

me, a Caniac: we're dooooomed!!! we are losing this series in 3!!!
hockey pundits: Ottawa wins the series in 6 games
me, a Caniac: PISTOLS AT DAWN, GOOD SIR!!!!

OK, this is hilarious and representative of the hockey establishment:

Listening to the Hot Stove program on the NHL network on satellite radio in the car this morning, the host was talking to Aaron Ward about this series. Ward predicted the Canes in 7 and the host kept pushing Ward to say the reason the series would go the distance is because the Canes don't score very many goals. Ummm....dude...only the Avalanche scored more goals this season than the Hurricanes did. Also, only three teams gave up less goals than the Hurricanes did. This is your profession! Can't you at least do some basic research before popping off like this? Lord!

Lazy journalism. It’s everywhere unfortunately

Honestly, that crap is why I quit listening to anything on the NHL Network. Those guys are mostly just clueless. I don’t need my own opinions validated, but I do need to at least suspect that we’re watching the same games.

I'm sure most of you will have higher quality and much deeper analysis of the series that just concluded, but if I had to pin it down one reason why not only did the Canes win this series, but swept the series:

When both teams' top lines were not producing, did another line step up? That's a big no for Ottawa and a huge yes for Carolina. That Hall, Stanky, Blake line became the Hurricanes' top line. What an incredible job they did stepping up like that.

Depth … which made it important for Ottawa to don something to disrupt Carolina’s flow. They kinda sorta tried to be more physical but it really didn’t work, just like it hasn’t worked for much of anybody else this season. But in a lot of ways, the Sens sort of ignored that they only had two decent lines and kept putting Pinto’s line out in situations they just couldn’t handle. When the top line for each team cancelled out their opposite number, the Sens didn’t have a Plan B for scoring and didn’t do anything else to make life difficult for Carolina. And I’m seeing a TON of people throwing blame at their players when the blame should start with their coach.

Realistically I would say Mon is probably the most likely start date with the way things look right now, with Sun or Tue also quite possible. The earliest the first round could wrap is Thu, but you really can’t schedule the game for Friday because you won’t know if the first round is done until late Thursday. The NHL has done dumb things but that would be pretty foolish. So I’d say Saturday is the earliest reasonably possible, but still pretty unlikely.
