New Canadian Politics Thread

The decision to build a subway to Scarborough isn’t an endless well of stupidity. There should be dozens of additional stops located throughout every area of the city, extending outwards to the surrounding outlying built-up regions. The stupidity lies in the myriad of factors that make it so cost prohibitive compared to every other developed nation. There’s no reason why Toronto shouldn’t have an extremely well-connected, high-density underground network like you find in all other global cities like London, New York, Paris, Tokyo, etc.
The LRT was fully funded and approved and would have had 7 stops accessible to more than double the people the subway line will serve. All this at a cost still ballooning billions beyond the LRT. Moreover, would have been completed or near complete by now. Instead the subway is scheduled for 2030 with the current RT shutting down and forcing people in Scarborough to ride buses instead. Just fucking briliiant stuff.

Gotta love the fiscally responsible conservatives that are costing billions to provide an alternative for billions more and vastly less public transportation service.

My recollection of the issue is that:
a) subway costs way, way more
b) population density and expert studies do not support need for a subway (as opposed to LRT)
c) LRT would include more stops

Of course the biggest problem is the lack of coherent planning and constant flip flopping and shredding of existing plans by the string of idiot, incompetent politicians.

Yeah, all the plans kind of suck and should have been done 20 years ago when things would have been cheaper and easier to do, but given where we are, they should have just taken whatever option and gone ahead with it. Even a less than optimal plan started 5 years ago would be in way better shape than whatever the current best option is.

Defund the police to fund [insert cause].

As far as causes go non-violent emergency services, & improved mental health services are a damn good use of monies shifted from (bloated) police budgets

The size of the racialized population in a municipality plays a central role in decisions about the strength of its police force. Researchers have found that Canadian cities with higher numbers of racialized people deploy a greater number of police officers per capita — regardless of crime rates, the total municipal population, and budgetary considerations.

and of course, there's that....

Funds could be used to offset the 30 year impact of all the downloads on the city -- namely, improving the disgraceful state of social housing and operational funding for the TTC. These are, of course, areas that would disporportionally impact the people who have disproportionately been shat on by police.
