My son (8y/o) has really gotten into the history of the Hurricanes, so I'm starting a 2nd podcast that's going to take a year by year look at the franchise since it's founding in Boston in 1971. I have some great guests lined up like Pat Pickens (author of "The Whalers" and some boosters and maybe a surprise player or two. Where yall might come in is or the later episodes; for the years 1995-1997ish I'd like to get as many personal experiences from old Whalers fans (Anyone know where GreensboroHurricanes is!?) about that transitional period from both Whalers fans experiences and culminating in early Canes fans experiences.

If you would like to talk to us let me know, or if you know someone maybe you can point them my way. JudgeWapner (Ray) is helping out with this one as well and we're hoping to help teach newer (and maybe older) Caniacs about the Whale, and cut through some of the rumormill/bad blood of what happened. The other 24ish episodes will be all Whale though, so we think it'll be a blast. Thanks in advance for any help yall provide!

Anyone interested can post here obviously or email me at stormcellar97 @gmail.com

Sadly, GreensboroHurricanes passed away some time ago. I also lost track of RonnieFranchise a few board moves back, and he was probably the best Hartford based resource from the old boards. CM can maybe pitch in though ... without speaking for the man. He's a carryover Whale man.

Thanks, and I'm sorry to hear about GreensboroHurricanes, he was always a great guy and great source of info.

I’ve said it before, but RF is my all time favorite poster on any forum I’ve ever been on. A great writer, passionate about the club, and an encyclopedic knowledge of the game. His lengthy piece on the Lindros father and son situation was a masterpiece.

I had Whalers season tickets for the final 3 seasons (was a fan before that of course) and would be willing to participate. I lived through the saga and the charade of the negotiations between Karmanos and the state...the farce that was the season ticket drive that final season to save the team in Hartford, cried the tears we all did at the final game, leaving the Hartford Civic Center for that final time knowing that was it for NHL hockey in Hartford. Oh and the teams, with some talent but like many Canes teams prior to Dundon, not enough of it.

Just let me know what you need and when.

Awesome, I'll reach out probably a couple months from now since we're currently recording 1974. ;)

I'm really hoping to put the facts out there for that time period because there was a lot of misinformation and pain all the way around. The ESPN message boards during that time were just brutal; just 2 fandoms (1 old and 1 new) that just hated each other.

To be fair to the newly fledged Canes fans on those boards ... we showed up not hating anybody and got met with dragon fire. It took about 2 seconds for the feelings to be mutual.

That's really what I meant, but that hate came on withing a couple weeks for me. I tried to play intermediary (Be mad at Karmanos not us, not our fault type of stuff), but the virtriole was just too much so I said "polar'em" for a few years until I matured some. Rough time of it back then. Finding whatever the first incarnation of what this board was, was a huge boon for me. Here we are 4-5 boards later I guess it's been. (y)

Yeah ... a few of us are refugees from those ESPN boards. Pretty sure Andy was there in the bad old days too, and probably others. It got real ugly real quick. There's good reason some of us resist Dundon's push to build nostalgia for that old logo.

Yeah, I was there. Either CM or HeyKurtz rescued me and pointed me to this group.

There was a guy who maintained stats on a website. He stopped after the 2015-16 season. I got a 404 when I tried to open it but I must have had an archived version of it. IIRC, he was a Hartford guy. His contact info on the website was Whaler at cox.net

I was smart enough to stay off those ESPN boards and anything else "official", I was on someone's personal board setup in the beginnings there starting Summer of 97 (I forget their names, a married couple ran it for several years), that eventually led us down the trail here (Scout, Scoreboards, I always preferred the harder to find places). Allen was there I remember, Stef maybe?, several others... @Punzil (also potentially a Whaler fan reference) may have been Beatle over there along with the infamous RF.. GH too (Bruce probably posted everywhere). We had a good core but still had to fight off a lot of hateful children. Also was on letsgocanes.com (read it, didn't always post) through that board's run.

Yep, me too. I think my first board after the ESPN debacle was the one that really established all of us as a group. I first started out on the HTS board then after some awful flame wars there, moved to ESPN, ironically enough, then onto the next board and I feel bad that I cannot remember the name of it. I know once someone says it, I'll remember it.

Yeah, Whaler. He would post his updated stats after every single game to whatever forums we were all a part of. IIRC, he was very old and retired that gig.

Ron and Jetta had the site I was first on back in the day. There was also hate for our Latvians for some reason.
Meh. That was just one guy, really. And he was a loon. Plenty of people hated Ozolinsh because of his indifferent manner and shabby defending, but only that one guy hated him because he was Latvian. Straight fruit loops, that one.
