It's not picking Ukraine or Russia. It's picking EU, UK, Canada, & Ukraine as an ally over Russia. If you insist on everything being transactional, it's picking 30 trillion dollars worth of trading partner over an authoritarian gas station of no functional national benefit to the US.

Of course, they're very useful if your primary concern is trying to get rich on bribe money. Which is of course why the Trump's are so enamored with them.

Every step along the way I've been alarmist about Trump, and even my alarmism turned out to miss the size of his threat by a lot.

This guy isn't just satisfied with ruining his own fucking country, he's intent on ruining the entire fucking planet.

Yeah, by about 150 Billion. Now of course, our GDP per capita is like 3-4x theirs, and our consumer classes are far wealthier than theirs which means we're a much, much better market for American goods despite having 1/3rd the population....because we can actually afford to purchase them.

But, and fucking crucially, we're not in the business of enriching corrupt politicians out of the public purse, which means Trump prefers Russia because it's about naked corruption.
