OT: American Politics

The job requirements on entry level jobs has gone way up, too. It's insane to see the requirements these days. You almost have to have a graduate degree just for entry level jobs now.

A symptom of an expanded lower level job class, with less higher-paid middle management, or a symptom of undergrad degrees having increasingly little value due to their prevalence.
Thanks to McKinsey, middle management is nearly extinct in corporate America, just like the middle class is nearly extinct in the rest of America. Today there are only overpaid owners and underpaid serfs, as Republican God intended.

Oh, goodie, another forever war
Fighting for democracy over a totalitarian invader is always worth fighting for, even if it takes forever. When you roll over for dictators they just get more emboldened until they try to take something you won't give up. So you always end up fighting them sooner or later but sooner is always better.

If England and France had stood up to Hitler in 1936 when he re-entered the Rhineland, WW2 would have been shorter and a lot less bloody. But when they did nothing, Hitler realized that he could push for more. So then it was annexing Austria. Nothing from the British or French. Then it was the Sudetenland. Again nothing.

Then it was threatening to take all of Czechoslovakia, which the Brits and French thought they could treaty their way out of. But dictators like Hitler don't honor agreements and the Munich agreement basically ceded Czechoslovakia to him anyway. So he took it.

And then, finally, in 1939, 3 years after Hitler retook the Rhineland, he invaded Poland and this time, Britain and France couldn't just look the other way. But by then the German war machine was the biggest and baddest on the planet.

The time to kill a dictatorship is in the creche, before it outgrows your capacity to contain it. This is why the West should be arming Ukraine. It's why the West should be committing troops (especially Count Jr.) and calling Putin's bluff. Because at the moment, bluffing is all Putin can do. But once Trump lifts the sanctions and starts sharing US intelligence with Russia like the traitorous shit stain he is and always has been, the bad guys are going to win.

his troops did love little Napoleon, alas George could have ended the rebellion in 1862 but didn't move on Richmond. He also didn't follow up after Antietam.

In the end though, the small power usually loses to the big power unless you are Vietnam or Afghanistan. I don't see Vlod ordering guerrilla warfare on the steppes or in the burned out shell of Artemvosk.

He won't need to order it. The Ukrainians will fight until the end. They will never surrender. The Russians will be slowly bled white, just like they were in Afghanistan, just like the Americans were in Vietnam. You want a forever war? Leave the Ukies to their own devices..

I’m very in touch of the economic realities young people face. I’m just not on the left so my go to position isn’t oh the poor things. It’s not their fault the government should help.
your posts in this thread make me think the opposite. how are you in touch with the economic realities young people face?

are you a young person facing these realities?

do you have kids facing them?

do you know any young people who are struggling to manage their student debt?

Is it working? It’s not. Kids are not learning the basics. Kids are ready for college apparently and don’t understand basic loans.
And the Republicans' answer to this is...more praying to Jebus in schools. Prayer and thw pledge of Allegiance is their big plan to fix public education. That and school vouchers so that the taxpayers can fund private schools for thw rich.

You want to fix education, both K-12 and post secondary? Take capitalism out of the equation altogether. It's the same formula that will fix healthcare. Less capitalism, more socialism. Education and healthcare are not luxuries which only the wealthy should be able to afford. They are basic human rights. And the richest country on Earth, the richest country in the history of the Earth, can damn well afford to provide them. Healthcare and education should be 100% government funded. Single payer healthcare, single payer education.

Will taxes go up? Sure. And to the people who constantly complain about the cost of things but never the value of those things I simply say "Fuck you. Pay your goddamn taxes and shut the fuck up."

And, of course, the best way to mitigate the tax burden on average Joe's? Make the corporate oligarchs like Musk, Thiel, and Bezos pay their fair share instead of the basically nothing they currently pay. Noblesse oblige. And if they refuse, drag them into the street and hang them from the nearest lamp post for all I care.

We are all in this together and ultimately we all stand to benefit so stop pretending that taxation is theft.

I'm paying student loan debt that's around $500/month while also paying for insane grocery costs, highest ever shelter costs, highest ever insurance costs, highest ever childcare costs, and also somehow saving a little every month for my daughters 529 account. I project i'll be able to save 50K in that 529 by the time she's 18 and yet I'm not hopeful that will cover all costs of a 4 year degree in 18 years.

No. Some to do with the breakdown of traditional families and morals. Some to do with a lack of respect for authority. Some to do with the lack of sportsmanship and the celebrity culture we have.

So you acknowledge all of this and yet....

Trump has 5 kids with 3 different women and cheated on all of them. Definitely not traditional nor moral.

Trump has no respect for any authority other than himself.

Trump cheats at everything (so much for sportsmanship) and he is nothing, if not a celebrity, and has courted public attention for decades.

So don't complain. You voted for all of this.

Literally nothing you've suggested this entire conversation is actionable. Retiring debt is. A permanent structural solution would be great, but is probably beyond the capability of US political culture. But breaking the back of entire generation with a choice between indebtedness with a hope of future financial solvency vs a choice of perpetual financial struggle is only going to end badly. Economic pragmatism has to win over dinner table financial morality.
All part of the Republican's forever war on the working classes.

Not to pile on to your worries but thats a stretch to pay for a 4 yr degree at a state school now.

The boomers were the beginning of the problem.

But what’s the point of arguing with you. You’ve made up your mind that the government is the solution everything. We’ll have to disagree on that.

I think the solutions to our problems are in the direction of personal responsibility, an objective morality, the value of the individual, and a shared melting pot of a culture. I think the constitution would work. I think that both parties and all of the candidates are a total disaster.
The Boomers got their start in life BECAUSE government was the solution back then. That generation was able to go to college basically for free thanks to government largesse which was bought and paid for, both financially and in actual blood, by the Greatest Generation.

And what did the Boomers do to pay it forward? Nothing. They simply pulled up the ladders so that they could have just a little bit more for themselves.
