OT: Canada Greener Homes Grant

Has anyone used this grant for efficiency renovations? If you have what was your experience with it.

Doing the assessment in a couple months. Isn't there a stupid ass short timeline to actually get the shit done after getting assessed? Wanna do windows as one of my things but prefer to wait till it gets warmer out.

These things tend to be a bit of a red herring. The assessments will likely tell you to spray foam your plates between floors and find other less bling ways to find efficiencies. And, if you can find out more, please let me know. We have solar on all three of our properties and payed 60 cents on the dollar for them with the rebates that used to be around.

April 1 2020 or after evaluations are acceptable right now. So doesn't appear to be that short.

My window guy is saying 12 weeks before they could start anyway, so trying to get it locked down now.

Oh okay good. Online it says: "You must complete a final home energy assessment to qualify for rebates. The follow-up visit takes about one hour and must take place within 120 days of your first visit" for the Enbridge one. And that seems insanely tight to me.

You would like get your initial assessment and then book your project and the follow up assessment well in advance.

My window contractor has said it has taken ~40 days for other clients to get the $$ from the govt (very small sample size). He is also offering a pricing schedule of 25% down payment (15 of 25 can be done upfront by the grant) and then no payments until we get the grant money.

Windows you only get $125 to 250 per rough opening. That’s not much.
The biggest thing is the upto 40k grant at 0% interest for the projects.

We will get ~1,600 in rebates (600 for the consultations and then 1,000 for windows)

Was hoping someone had gone though the process to see how much BS you put up with to use thw program.

Spray foaming your headers is actually a really good way to improve efficiency, to be fair. I think up to 50% of heat loss can be from uninsulated headers.

For what it's worth from the little I've heard from a couple people, it seemed like a painless experience. Just don't count on the money coming right away and don't expect crazy high discounts. Seems they're combining with the Enbridge progrum effective January so that's nice and just makes things easier.

$325 max for windows. Not that the energy savings from new windows will ever be as worth the upfront cost as something like attic insulation, but it's something.

Right. Given the current rates, interest free loans are hot.

What I remember is you want to get your home checked before you make improvements, and try to do as much as you can while you're spending money anyway...we were doing our windows and ended up redoing attic insulation and some other things.

It was a long time ago, the thing that stuck with me ( and maybe things have changed) was knowing how efficient your house is before any renos, and that yes it was worth the time and small hassle but only if you're spending a bit.
