OT: Coronavirus Resources - and other things to not worry about

At least they respond with a plan a week or two too late, unlike 8 months and counting like some countries I could name...

Good thread on the “Great Barrington Declaration”, an anti-lockdown petition of “scientists and medical professionals” being promoted heavily by Sun Media and Conservative politicians this week:

There were 3 pretty obvious problems with it before even finding out that it was a Koch initiative

1) It mentions protecting the olds, but works under the assumption that the olds are easy to protect (mainly via "isolation"). This isn't remotely true, 90% of the olds are fully integrated into society...as in, they're our neighbours, they shop at the same stores and use the same services to maintain their lifestyle as we do. There's this really weird underlying idea to the whole concept of "protecting our vulnerable" that talks about all high risk people like they live in old folks homes. That's the vast minority of 60+. So if we don't have a plan on how to isolate millions of fully functioning seniors in their personal homes with comfort and dignity, we don't have a fucking plan

2) It completely ignores that somewhere between 40-50% of society has underlying medical conditions that are aggravated by covid. This idea that we're a super healthy society that can weather this is just wrong. This idea that only the weakest among us will die from covid is also wrong.

3) This thing is a scourge even to the young and healthy. Full fucking stop. It won't kill them, but we've got pretty clear evidence that life long damage is being done to their respiratory systems even when they're asymptomatic. So the idea of just letting everyone under 30-35 go back to absolute normal because this isn't going to outright murder them and the sooner we hit 70% societal penetration the better, is just a really, really bad idea.

Was Sweden right after all? Their data is looking good compared to the rest of the west... I am still not convinced and will wait for more data

If by "good" you mean 5-10x as many deaths per capita as their neighbours.

I know there's a lot of fear mongering going on with suicide rates and depression and whatnot. But from what I've seen there has not been an uptick in either. Some biased studies/articles but otherwise not seeing much of that. It's something that we think would happen so people are trying to prove that it has happened. But the facts don't match up. At least not yet.

yep
like i said earlier - suicide is flat or even down in AB

People overall I feel have reacted way better than a lot of people predicted/expected. Obviously long term we'll have to see - so many people will have essentially lost a full year of school, so how that impacts long-term prospects will certainly be something to watch. Also I have to imagine a large chunk of population is now being conditioned further to shun people and society. However, on the flipside, I bet there's a ton of introverts out there who are thrilled to no longer be pressured to into social gatherings and will thrive off the changes.

It also definitely feels like it would be a great time to start looking into fully changing up life. If society moved more towards a 4-day (or maybe 4.5 day) work week, for example, would be an absolutely massive social experiment. Life is crazy, it's time to shake things up even more.

Maybe...just maybe, focusing on spending time with the 5-10 people closest to you and not regularly engaging in big box consumer society is...good...for your mental health?
