OT: Coronavirus Resources - and other things to not worry about

I miss something? Natives?

Haven’t been watching much news lately.

There were a bunch of native protests up here a few months ago, right when covid was firing up. I was worried about covid. He was making fun of me for being worried about covid, while claiming that the native protests had the potential to "shut the economy down" because they managed to make one train stop.

Easily the worst non-Preston based call in FI history.

One thing is certain, heat is not killing the virus. Besides FL, Texas and Arizona are showing clear spikes in case numbers this past week, probably a sign that those states were a little too confident going in. With Vegas opening up and creating a new wave of potential superspreaders, I am not too confident about a relaxing summer

Thing is heat in those states means less being outdoors. Similar to a Canadian winter. I'm not too surprised to see their numbers shoot up really. Same thing will happen here when the weather goes to shit. I'm really making an effort getting out, seeing my parents (outdoors only) and just enjoying life because I'm not confident the fall and winter will be very fun.

These states all had the highest number of new cases *today*

California - 3,627
Florida - 1,902
Arizona - 1,654
North Carolina - 1,846
Georgia - 993
Alabama - 865
Arkansas - 731
South Carolina - 729
Mississippi - 608

And new records from yesterday...

Florida 2,625 (!!!!)
Georgia 1,018
Alabama 891
South Carolina 785

Louisiana with their highest number of cases since April.

Damn, the NBA and NHL ain't coming back are they?

This entirely predictable result of premature excitement and a lack of preparation pretty much guarantees that these sports teams start to think twice about running their operations in Florida. Could also spook them about going somewhere else, unfortunately.

Stupid country.

This is pretty much why all along I haven't expected that we'll get a conclusion to the 2019/20 season.

Being able to conclude the season depends in large part on the USA's ability to get the virus under control. And I struggle to imagine why anyone would have confidence in their ability to do that at this moment in their history.

Same.

Although I'm thinking that it would have to come from the NBA to say they're not doing it because Florida will still probably let them, IMO. I don't expect these governors, that make all their decisions based on how it will please Dear Leader, to shut things down again.

For sure. Those guys are fully committed members of the Trump cult, so I'd be shocked if any if them changed course.

And yeah, I'd think either the NBA itself or their players would pull the chute, and then the NHL will follow the NBA's lead.

I read that a significant amount of NBA players don't want to come back due to BLM issues. If that is the case NHL and NFL will follow.

Resuming the season was always a coin flip at best.... the leagues needed to make substantial plans just in case. What else are they supposed to do?

as for NBA players and BLM, I still contend that playing gives them a much greater platform for social change than not playing. Systemic racism and inequality isn’t going to go away after a few months of protests and boycotting.

seems like the downtime has given some players a chance to focus on important issues...it’s a shame that the 4 yrs since Colin Kaepernick tried to reboot the civil rights movement were mostly frittered away.

So... the woman who was in charge of the Florida dashboard who says she was fired for refusing to put misleading or false data re COVID has created her own dashboard.

Shows 7,625 more cases and 91 more deaths than the official Florida one.

One thing to consider is that although a bunch of these states are having their case numbers go up (ie Florida, California), their death rates have flattened out and even gone down for a few states. Who knows what this means given the inconsistency in reporting, but this could lead credence to the observation that the virus could be becoming less deadly than a few months ago.

Case numbers are not the be all end all at this current time. If more people are getting this but the majority are having little to minimal symptoms, given good contact tracing and isolation practices we could be in for a better rest of 2020 than we all expect. I also expect the fall and winter to not be as dreadful as many expect given social distancing guidelines and mask wearing will likely bring down the expected numbers of COVID and influenza, as seen with the lower infection rates in countries like Japan and Korea who have adopted mask wearing for years now.
