OT: Movies/TV Shows

Buffy started 27 years ago, in 1997.

A similarly old show in 1997 would have started in 1970.

Mary Tyler Moore show started in 1970. All in the Family didn't start until 1971. MASH in 1972.

Yep. I can’t lie—I watched MASH when I was a teenager, and thought of it then as a show that was old as shit.

And Buffy is absolutely the equivalent vintage to someone who’s now in their early 20’s or younger.

Fuck.

That MASH song was old as shit as soon as it came on, and lame to me as a teenager. And I'm the most nostalgic guy on the planet who loves all kinds of old shit. To date, I still haven't watched one full episode of MASH. Something about it that just turns me off.

Had a similar thing with Taxi and that song, though I've watched some episodes over the years and it's decent.

Also All in the Family. When I was a teenager, and I heard Edith's screeching, I was like what in the fuck is this shit and immediately change the channel. Not sure what got me to watch an episode when I was in college, but immediately fell in love with it, and it's still one of the best shows ever that totally stands up today.

Well... I have good news and bad news for you. I'll start with the bad news. Your intuition is absolute shit. The good news.... nay, great news. You have some of the greatest television ever made waiting for you. MASH is flat out amazing. Absolute gut busting comedy mixed with gut wrenching drama. Do yourself a favor and give it a shot. Alan Alda is just the tits. Really smart comedy mixed with some absurdity.

Taxi is really funny as well, but more schticky... but really good.

It's not intuition. It's small samples. I've seen a few minutes of MASH here and there, and I don't know, it's just so dim and dreary looking, and there's just something about it that doesn't make me want to keep watching. Maybe I'm just leaving it till a point in my life when something like that appeals to me. Taxi is good, not super compelling, just entertaining. I've seen a bunch of episodes.

Fair enough with Taxi... MASH though, it could be that you're looking at it as a sitcom. It's kinda been billed as such over the years. Watch it if you're in the mood for a drama with comic relief. It's a pretty realistic (or feels like it) depiction of the Korean war. People dealing with the absolute worst possible situations but they're relatable because they deal with those situations with some humor at times. It's absolutely not a sitcom.

Show seemed to have shifted its tone after the first few seasons. I enjoyed the show throughout its entire run.

Gimme a couple of YouTube clips of MASH that properly represent what you think is great about the show.

It would be tough to really give you any of the great dramatic scenes... but here's a bunch of top notch, witty, brilliant scenes from Alan Alda aka Hawkeye. So many great lines in this montage.

Of course, as a highlight reel, it makes it look like a strict comedy, but there's a ton of heart felt scenes and drama.

The Penguin finale was awesome, just like the entire season.

Obviously I hated that he killed Vic... But I guess he was too "likeable and they wanted us to hate him for season 2.

I saw a time lapse video today of Farrell sitting in the makeup chair for that.

Three hours, every day. Looks kind of intolerable.

I should add that I don't think there is a season 2 but just batman 2 the movie that he has to typical bad guy for.

Oh shit, yeah that makes sense. So, they wanted him to be more hateable for the movie. Either way, it worked. Great show though.
