OT: The M-Fing Food Thread

My coffee rig crapped out. What thread was that discussion in again? So many food threads here.

Or better yet, any recommendations?

Depends on what you're going for

If you're cool with making coffee one cup at a time, and you're into only coffee flavoured coffee, pour over or aeropress are the kings imo. If you need multiple cups made at once, a good drip brewer is fine, but you're going to want a decent grinder and to dial in your preferred bean and grind combo to get what you want.

Mind you, you'll want a good grinder for the other two methods as well.

Agreed with every word Mindz said, I’d just add..

- if you go Aeropress learn the inverted method.

- if you go pour-over Chemex is the OG & it’s a beautiful meeting of form & function, also their filters while pricey, are particularly thick so it makes incredibly smooth coffee….also just looks great when you have someone over and make a few cups. (It’s it’s too pricey, Hario makes a great pour over glass brewer as well, just has cheaper thinner glass, and thinner filters, but it’s one I’ll buy if I land somewhere without a pourover

- grinder is a must….you want a burr grinder to get the best results. Hand grinder you can go Hario, and if you don’t mind spending the cash Baratza Encore is a great one, incredibly well made and as close as buy it for life as they come as anything goes wrong Baratza will ship you the individual piece you need and walk you through fixing it.

- personally I think a temperature controlled gooseneck kettle is a must as well, just because you can alter the flavour of a brew so much just by tweaking your temp a little…then when you find your sweet spot, you have it locked in & it brings it to the temp you like & holds it till you’re ready. I think they even come with wifi control now so you could start the kettle from bed, so it’s ready when you get there.

- if you just want a drip, the OXO 8-Cup machine is pretty fantastic….bought one for my mother who has zero interest in any of this barista bullshit….and while it’s not quite an aero press or Chemex cup of coffee….it’s a bit closer than I’d like, given the fuss I put into mine, haha….also great that it’s a stainless steel insulated carafe so you can make a bunch and it’ll stay hot for ages.

….but even if you go drip, you gotta get a burr grinder. Good quality fresh roasted beans & a quality grinder is 85% of the job done…

There is something to be said for the ritual of hand grinding beans, and making your pour-over with a gooseneck kettle tho….there’s just an extra aesthetic, meditative, words can’t properly capture value that’s added, that amounts to more than just the tastier cup of coffee you’re getting.

Jura Z6, z8, or z10
Not in the mood to spend 3500 but ya that's where I'd go if I was in the mood.

Looking for a built in grinder system with multiple grind settings. Espresso and cappuccino is a must with milk steamer obviously.

Been surfing and just can't decide.

What about tamping?

I don't have a lot of toys. I'm a simple man with simple pleasures. But this is a product I cannot live without after experiencing it for about a year. I was happy to grind it out with my Hario v60 pour over for many many years but at a certain point you start valuing convenience over searching for that perfect cup of coffee to your taste. I would temp the water, time the extraction process, etc. Now I press a button and my hopes and dreams are fulfilled every time. That's all I want at this stage of my life.

Price isn't great though yeah.

my old office had an all in one Breville machine. it was adequate if nothing spectacular. but I imagine it would have been much better had we not been using the costco/starbucks espresso beans...

I looked a Breville, was meh. Not terrible but meh so ya I can see what you're saying minus the cruddy beans.

I’m not really a coffee aficionado, but an ex was so I bought a Nespresso so she could use that at my place and she was into it. I still have it but don’t use it, so it’s now a Nexpresso. I figured this thing would be the top choice among people who love coffee, and yet not mentioned so it’s probably frowned upon.
