OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

He just came back from TJ surgery. He could be a great #3
No doubt. I only consider him a #3/4, so at that price, there's nothing to not like.

But again, only 1 year, and I'm still annoyed that he blew it in his first inning of work when we needed him most.

there would have been a bidding war. One less arm to worry about for 26. Plenty of time to worry about 27.

I don't even think we'd have to take a bigger contract back. Find a team that spent on a 10 million dollar reliever that hasn't really worked out. Like Stephenson, Minter, Jordan Hicks. Most front offices would probably rather overpay a bit on a starter that will give them 170-190 good enough innings on the low end with a maybe shot at your pitching coach turning him back into a #3, than they would spend 10-11 million on a guy who either can't stay healthy, or you don't trust later than the 7th inning, etc. We're in the opposite situation right now where we we should be trying to find everything we can that could possibly put up a sub 3.50 fip in decently difficult leverage and especially with Bieber opting in (fucking shocked, ngl), the bullpen rebuild should have a more or less unlimited budget.

Its also possible a team like the Marlins would love a vet like Berrios for the latin community, if they are willing to spend but can't attract a FA SP.

All that said, we can just keep him, see if the rest helps, and he tweaks himself to be a backend SP, i'm happy to make that bet.

Where does he even fit though?

Gausman
Bieber
Trey
FA
Lauer

Have to imagine that with his only kick at free agency in his career coming up in 2027, Lauer wants to start. He wants that #4-5 money. A rotation with both of them instead of only one at the 5 goes from being a strength to a meh in a hurry if Berrios doesn't get back to 2023 form. Would rather just go get a FA, find a new home for Berrios and then let Ricky and Lauer scrap it out for that 5 spot. I don't want that big Berrios contract being a reason we 1) don't spend on an upgrade and 2) block Ricky if he's ready

He's upset with the org over playoff shit twice now, just pull the pin and do the dump wherever will take him.

Im fine with Berrios/Lauer battling for the 5 with the loser going into the pen.

It's not like the rotation is going to be healthy all year.

If we cant find a team willing to take on Berrios this would be my approach, im not attaching a prospect to dump him.

Lauer goes to arby, he really has no say how he gets used.

The key is to make sure Bieber coming back is the Bassitt replacement and effectively Yesavage is the Scherzer one ( or however you want to frame it)

Getting Bieber at effectively 12M is a tidy piece of business, but you really want to aim for a SP better than him to make this rotation very high end.

I think from a pure stuff standpoint Cease and Framber are the best fits. Cease is simply the best SP on the market flat out, the fact they tried super hard for Burnes makes me think they will look here too, and Framber has just been an absolute rock while he's been in the league, is a lefty and generates a ton of ground balls. The issue with him would be clubhouse fit, he might be the wrong kind of asshole.

The next tier is King, who i think has the stuff of the above two, but has health issues that make him riskier, i would have my medical team all over this. Ranger Suarez is 4th and probably a distant 4th, he has some of the same health concerns as King, but is coming off a career and healthy year. He's good, but there are red flags.

If my Asia guy in house loved Tatsuya Imai, i'd look at him, and the more i think about it Brandon Woodruff probably belongs in the KIng/Ranger conversation as the 5th guy, and maybe Gallen as the 6th, but i'd want my medicals checked out on the former and my nerds making sure the latter isnt cooked

Pass on Bassitt, Imanaga, Max, Verlander, Giolito, Littell and Elfin, some of these guys are pretty good ( Bassitt) and some of them are terrifying ( Imanagna) but i just want to be in the top or at least top adjacent tier.

Ranger Suarez is coming off a great season, I think I would rather go for him than either Cease (coming off a bad season) or Framber (personality). Those 3 are the top talents, after that, you're just into the King, Martinez, Bassitt territory. Which, ok, sure. And yeah, there's a bunch of weird options in there that might be great FA signing, but might be terrible.

If none of the FA make sense, you could look at a trade. Someone like Alcantara might be an option - bad season overall, but was better in the 2nd half than his dreadful first couple months. Freddy Peralta probably is a trade bait option too. Not sure what either of them would cost.

But yeah, I think you still want one more starter who you can count on to potentially be a #1 guy in a good year, not just rotation filler.
