But, eventually he will die and the level of stress he's under at his age is definitely unhealthy for him and harming his chances at longevity.

I don't think the CharlieBrown.gif is apt here, because of the 100% certainty that he will in fact, fucking die at some point. More importantly for our purposes is that dictators don't get to wither and hold on to their power very often either. Salazar is a good example here. Ran portugal for decades, beat down every challenge to his power, looked like his rule was going to last "forever" until a medical issue in his late 70's knocked him down hard. He was deposed from power while in the hospital and thought he was still in power for the 1-2 years between getting out of the hospital and his death and the people around him just played along. Regardless of how firm a despot's grip on power is, as soon as they become frail, they're fucked.

I mean, sure. Of course he’ll die someday. I’m not under the impression he’s immortal.

It’s moreso that we’ve been getting regular flimsy hopium about Vlad being at death’s door for the duration of the Ukrainian conflict at least, and yet he’s still here, still firmly in charge of Russia, still occupying large swathes of Ukraine and still regularly killing scores of Ukrainians.

So at this point, stories about Vlad’s allegedly failing health, frailty or imminent death just make me roll my eyes. The timeline we're living in just isn’t lucky enough for nature to make it easy on us and take out Vlad anytime soon. Barring a non-natural cause of death, he’ll probably live for another 10-15 years.

Wait? We have? There's been a few short periods of media stories making note of what looks like weird swelling or other geriatric shit, but at no point has anyone started talking about his pending doom like it's imminent. I think you're overstating this a bit mate.

I get the reflex action here, I just think it's overly negative based on the history of dictatorships. The vast majority of dictators lose power years before they die and very few crack 80. It's like worrying about il Douche making it until he's 90....just fucking look at him now at 79. The end is nigh. I'm not saying Putin is as close as Trump is, but all it takes is one reasonably sized stroke and that's the functional end of the regime.

It's important to not over emphasize this of course, it's a fucked up looking hand, but we can't dismiss this stuff either. The fact of the matter is, the biggest autocrats on the planet right now are 79 with bunch of circulatory conditions, 73 with whatever the fuck Putin has been hiding, and a 72 yr old also facing weird health rumours that won't go away in China. They're all on the clock. You don't need to die to lose power.
