Preseason GDT: Canes in Florida 9/29

A pair of spring training baseball-style split squad games.

We finally come to the reason for the 826 PTOs, as the Canes play simultaneously in Sunrise and Tampa. The Sunrise squad will be mostly rookies and PTOs and will have RBA and video coach Chris Huffine on the bench. Rantaa and Koochie in goal. The Tampa squad is more vets, including first appearances by Staal, Aho, Jarvis, Turbo, Fast and Necas, with Andersen and Perets in goal. Notably Felix Unger Sorum will be playing in Tampa. The top 4 dmen aren’t making the trip; as Walt Ruff tweeted yesterday, they‘re pretty much assured of making the team. No radio tonight and links to game streams will be posted on the Canes website shortly before game times, 6 in Sunrise, 7 in Tampa.

Those top 4 defensemen should get exactly as much pre season ice time as they ask for. They've all be around the block enough to know what they need to be ready for opening night. Everybody else either has something to prove, a job to win or a system to get used to ... they need every possible shift. Especially those coming from teams that don't really play a consistent system ... cough, cough Jones.

Nice to see Unger Sorum (Unger is part of the last name, yes?) make such an early impression. This staff isn't easily impressed and the guys that do impress them have generally delivered.

There is also a home and home with Nashville next week, so I’m sure Slavin, et al will get enough work there. Plus, I expect a big cutdown over the weekend, so there will be fewer players to choose from on game days.

As for Unger Sorum, everything I’ve seen and heard has Unger as part of his last name. Sort of like Joel Eriksson Ek with the Wild.

In Unger Sorum's case it's more fun if the Unger is in the last name ... in Ek's case it's the opposite. I'm a card carrying supporter of fun, as everyone knows.

His family could have made it simpler and hyphenated it like Zach Aston-Reece or Oliver Ekman-Larsson. But what’s the fun of that?

It is at these moments when I am most sad that I do not have Apple TV+.

But really, those games sucked on toast last night. I'm almost glad I was called into a "Major Incident" from work about 7:30pm, and after that, merely had the games on a secondary monitor (and half the time on mute) while I was on a Teams call.

Yes that are two last names. One from each parent. One is swedish and the other one norwegian actually.

At least the bluegrass festival was fun, interesting, & came out good. Good thing is neither game mattered.

Getting closer to the real season every day.

Glad there was good weather for IBMA this year. The lineup is always awesome ... the weather, not so much.
