R.I.P. Ken Dryden

I would say 3rd or 4th best goalie in Habs history. Roy, Price, Dryden/Plante, Durnan, Gump.

Hasek best goalie ever.
On what planet is Price and his zero Cups better than Dryden's 6 in 8 years?

Sure, Dryden played with great teams but...

They were huge underdogs against the defending champion Bruins in 71.

When Dryden sat out the 73-74 season after winning his 2nd Cup, the Habs didn't win shit until he came back.

As soon as he retired, they went back to not winning shit again.

Dryden was the best Habs goalie of all time, bar none.

As for Hasek, he played mostly in the dead puck era. He is overrated.

How many HOFers did Dryden & St Patrick play with vs Price. Hint: the latter played w ONE his entire Habs career (Weber) and made the Cup finals.

How many 40G / 50G / 80pts+ players did Price ever have on his team? Hint: ONE season of Kovalev… Price’s rookie season.

This is the wrong thread to debate this, but just remember Price is the only G in NHL history to dominate as best player at every level:

- CHL G of the year (TriCity)
- WJC Gold + G of tournament
- AHL Calder Cup + playoff MVP
- Olympic Gold + G of the tournament
- NHL Vezina + Hart Trophy as MVP

Doesn't matter. The Habs had those same HOFers who won the Cup in 73 in 74 and they didnt win shit because their goaltending wasn't up to par. And most of that dynastic team of 76-79 was still there in 1980 after Dryden retired and they got embarrassed by the North Stars in the playoffs.

Every player with a number in the rafters is both a Hall of Famer and has won at least one Cup as a Hab. That is the standard. You dont meet it, you don't get it.

Remember, there are plenty of other ways to honor Price's contributions short of jersey retirement and there is no actual "need" to retire a jersey. There are plenty up there and it should be reserved for players who actually win Cups.

Someday, Suzuki might have his jersey retired. Or Demidov. Or Hutson. IF they win the Cup and go to the HHOF. If not, "tant pis".

Those are mostly HOF arguments and it wasn’t even enough to get in on the first try.

Price was great but his resume is impaired by weak teams and relatively short period of dominance.

He should get in on the second try but he's never going to have a Cup ring so he's permanently ineligible for jersey retirement. I dont even think Price himself would want it to happen because he knows that every other player number currently up there did something he couldn't get done.

The common denominator for all retired jerseys has to be winning, otherwise it's just a popularity contest. If Steve Shutt's 22 cant be retired despite his HOF status and 5 Cup rings, how the hell can anyone make a case for Price? How does Jacques Lemaire, who in an 11 year career won EIGHT Cups, not get his 25 retired but it's okay to retire Price's? Get da fuck outta here with that shit.
