The 2019-2020 MotherFucking Season Thread

Thats a major blackeye on Dubas for not addressing the goaltending issue much earlier if this season goes down like that

Easily the biggest mistake that can be pinned solely on him.

I advocated for trading Freddy while the market for him should have been hot and bringing in Lehner. Walking away from Ceci in arby, and using that cap to get another goalie. We dedicated 9.5m in cap to a goalie who had proven himself to be a flop show under pressure 3 yrs in a row, and a #5-6 RHD. We could have taken Freddy as an asset and turned him into a good player (maybe even a RHD), signed a better goalie, and had cap space to grab a backup (DeSmith on waivers would have been just fine).

I'm guessing they think that continuing to show faith in Andersen and hoping he can somehow get back to November Freddy, that's the best thing for the team.

But they were so shit in the first 23 games that they may not have the luxury of waiting for him to find his game.

They don't have that luxury but I guess the idea is that the goal isn't to sneak into the playoffs and get thumped by the Brightning in round one. It's to win a cup and we either need Frovember or we're probably fucked, so give Froskala as much leash as we possible can.

Turned on sports radio. Some analyst named Andre Deveaux, i think he used to french punch faces claimed in order. Andersen is their guy, gotta roll with him, the team MVP as of a little while ago and their best player, would be nowhere near playoffs without him

Pierre LeBrun on TSN1050: Other GM's say Dubas is very busy. One GM told LeBrun he has a guy who he thinks would fit the Leafs top 4RD need but might need to wait til offseason because of salary cap. Panthers also very busy, looking for top 4D.

Who could it be?

He was Leaf for a short stint so he is an SME on them now

This really is a circular problem.

Good players made more money than face punchers/grinders during their career. Good players know the game on a better, deeper level than face punchers and grinders. But because they made so much more money, they're largely not interested in TV/Radio work that requires you to be places at certain times and do things you kind of don't want to, for maybe a couple hundred K a year. Especially if you're not a Toronto native and don't live here year-round.

So instead we get face punchers who had shorter face punching careers and significantly lower career earnings coming on TV/Radio to tell us how the game is supposed to be played, the way they understand it. To a hammer, every problem is a nail. So we get an endless parade of hammers trying to tell us how to sculpt because the chisels are too busy on the beach to be bothered with Toronto in January.

The hammers infect our general hockey consciousness with hammer rubbish, and nobody who didn't play the game wants to challenge the hammers on their hockey knowledge "BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T EVEN PLAY NERD!!!!". Rinse and repeat.

There aren't many defenders that don't fit in our current cap structure with the amount of LTIR room we have, unless he's expecting and wants Ceci back before the playoffs.

yeah, there is literally no cap worry no matter who is the target.

When i read that i started thinking of the Sabres. Not sure why. What do you guys think of Rasmus Ristoleinen?

Rumors of us being in on Colin Miller last offseason. Wonder if we circle back on that?

This is potentially interesting. Ristoleinen reportedly asked to be traded before the season, and they are still spinning their wheels, so he's probably available.

And I've always liked Denis Malgin, thought he had more offensive potential but looks like a bottom 6 guy at best. Can play C or W though and was a good get for Marchment.

The other thig, and im stretching here is that putting all the blame on Andersen lets some of These lazy fuckers off the hook. By all accounts Andersen is liked, no? These cats should be embarrassed and motivated to perform for him.

I personally only bought into 40% of what i just said

I don’t think it’s all on Fred either..... he has not been good but the team buckles easily under pressure on top of that.... there is more rotten here than just goaltending from what I can see.

Oh i think its almost all on Fred, this is just a narrative they could be trying to sell

LeBrun saying the Leafs are discussing Risto

I don’t believe it but if it’s true I really start to question things

I guess it depends on what you call "rotten". I don't think even the most enthusiastic analytic user here would call the Leafs much better than average defensively. But I don't think the goaltending statistics are lying. We've had bottom tier goaltending performances almost all season, but average to average plus defensive impact performances (aided by being a strong possession team while at the same time both not taking a lot of penalties and limiting chances on the PK at a league leading rate). The most rotten thing about our defensive performance imo is that it's been missing it's #1 defender for a month now, which is something that most teams are going to struggle with.

Basically, I don't think the .888 sv% we've received since January 1st is unfair to the level of goaltending we've received, and I don't think there's a whole lot that any team can do to look pleasing to the eye test on a defensive level when you're getting goaltending like that.

I mean, here's the workload statistics over the same period of time

Per 60:

14th in shot attempts against
13th in shots against
21st in chances against
15th in high danger chances against
Which combined, ranks us 11th in expected goals against

So nobody is going to confuse us with the Brodeur era Devils, but we're pretty comfortably average overall in shot volume and quality metrics.

Going the other way:

9th in shot attempts
10th in shots
3rd in chances
3rd in high danger chances
3rd in expected goals for

The problem is pretty clearly:

29th in SV%

Game after game we see goalies at the other end making stops that "you can't blame Freddy for that" when they end up in our net. The Pittsburgh game is a good example. We didn't play well and looked asleep for extended stretches. 2 of the goals against were varying degrees of ugly and 3 would have required great reads/great saves. But at the other end, Jarry made 2-3 of those types of stops. Nobody seems to think it's abnormal with the opposition goalie does it, but becomes abnormal to expect any of those types of stops at our end.

I'm open to the idea that there are holes in the analysis of the metrics. A couple of those Pittsburgh goals last night were "high danger chances" but they crossed the dreaded "royal road" before the shot, which we know statistically elevates the chance of it going in. I don't think xG accounts for puck movement before the shot. But what I don't think is possible here is that what isn't accounted for in xG, lighting the entire concept of shot location being a rough approximation for shot quality and pissing on it. Especially when even a moderately informed eye test can easily point out a slow, lazy performance by Fred this year. He's tracking pucks terribly, he's challenging shooters poorly, he's lazy post to post, he's an adventure with the puck way too often. On top of that, anyone who saw Hutch play and doesn't see a scrambling mess the majority of the time should take up watching Tennis instead.
