The 2019-2020 MotherFucking Season Thread

Yeah I mean.. This guy seems legitimately really really really good. I'd be more excited if we weren't in the middle of a pandemic, but he is quite clearly potentially a legit top 4 d. Seems to be in the mold of a Torey Krug type.

He's not a midget like krug.

Nope, but exact same playing style with an extra 2 inches and hopefully better at defending. Asking him to be as good as or better offensively might be asking too much but if he can defend at an even average level it's a huge win.

we don't get a lot of powerplays. barring some kind of significant roster makeover, we'll be at or near the bottom again next season.

don't get me wrong, it's a decent signing. like Dermott, maybe he'll be good enough to be a top 4 this season. It also lets us sacrifice Dermott+ to truly improve the right side, if that is the plan.

I think 50 points is asking a lot. having said that, I'm way more interested in his defence. if he's even top-4 average at positioning, awareness and ability to separate man from puck, it's a huge win for us.

At this price, he'd also be a bargain as a solid #5 who gives us PP minutes as well, if he's not quite as good as the above.

decent chance this pans out in the positive for us, it seems.

Yeah I mean any d can pop 50 points depending on the pp they play on. If he drives potential at an elite level 5 on 5 and can be at least average defensively, that's Krug/Gardiner second pair d level good. Think there's a legit chance he is that good but we shall see.

Modern NHL Leafs, by best of ERA - pick your favorite line/pairing:

Nylander - Matthews - Marner
Roberts - Sundin - Mogilny
Clark - Gilmour - Andreychuk
Thompson - Sittler - MacDonald

Muzzin - Rielly
Kaberle - McCabe
Salming - Turnbull

Belfour
Potvin

funny that the only era team that was good defensively was also the era with no legit top pair dmen.

I don't think many of us can say anything about the Sittler era since few of us were of the age back then.

For the other three, it's tough. I loved the Sundin line, but that was probably a cut below the Dougy line, which had a bit of everything - great playmaking, elite front of the net scorer, and an amazing power forward who was physical and talented. I feel like it's too early to compare the Matthews line because although he's a generational-type scorer, we need to see more from them as a whole.

As for D, I gotta take Kabby and McCabe. Booming point shot to go along with some mental breakdowns, but Kaberle was one of the most underrated players in NHL history. That guy was a cool, calm, incredibly intelligent player.

I think i gotta lean on the '70s pair because Salming was such a stud.

But man its hard to pick a forward line. I think I lean towards the matchews line just because each guy is at least as or more skilled than their counterparts on the other lines, but at the same time its cool to have physical beasts like roberts and Wendel, too.

But I gotta go with the matthews line there, just because they're already as good at 22 as those guys were in their primes.

I have two trains of thought here. If I'm looking for the best line to build my team around for 5 yrs, it's the Matthews line. If I needed a game 7 won in the playoffs, it's Sundin. Defense has to be the Salming pairing though, although Kaberle-McCabe gives me pause.

Salming is an easy pick. I'm too young to have watched him, but what have we really had since? It's a desert.

Eddie in goal, another easy pick. same question.

At forward, I think Matthews is the best player the Leafs have ever drafted, but it remains to be seen if he'll ever match Gilmour's best year here. I think if it's a game 7 situation I'd go with peak Gilmour -- 127 points and the Selke is probably the best and most dominant season by a Leaf player that I can think of.

How can you guys choose Salming probably without ever seeing him play a game?

It’s like ranking Keon against the forwards. Who the fuck knows?

Good skater, PP QB, nice point shot, drives possession. Scouts who have actually watched him have made the comparison to Krug as well. It's probably a good one and we should be happy if it's even half true.

And it's a stylistic comparison for us folks who have yet to watch him play, not a quality of player comparison. Height doesn't determine playing style.

Krug is a very unique player with unique weaknesses and risk factors.

Doesn't make sense as a comparison. There are plenty of good skating dmen that aren't midgets.

Just a weird stance to take when you haven't seen him play. I'll defer to the scouts on this one. And you're right, he's very unique. Offensively he's a volume shooter and play driver by transitional puck-moving with very strong zone exit stats. By all accounts Lehtonen is quite similar in that regard.
