The 2019-2020 MotherFucking Season Thread

I'm a fan. Liked him better than most of the callups this year. Liked him better than Malgin too.

How did Zaitsev's KHL stats match up to Lehtonen's?

When it comes to KHLers and US college players, my view is I'll believe it when I see it at the NHL level. Though this is really promising, so can't say I'm not excited about this kid.

Boy wonder has done a good job finding talent overseas so I do trust him on a signing like this.

Now if he only stopped getting bent over in contract negotiations and he would really be something.

I miss these posts. I want the world to be normal again so you can go after the hockey opinion groupthink known as forumice again!

Spending big money on elite players and finding deals every year on the bottom 6 is basically the team building strategy we've been clamouring for on this board since we all started posting here, I thought.

Zaitsev was a couple of years younger though, wasn't he?

1 yr

The other thing to consider regarding their relative production is that Zaitsev played in the wealthy, stacked CSKA Moscow org and finished 5th in scoring on the team. Lehtonen played for Jokerit last year and led the team in scoring.

As we saw in Zaitsev's rookie year, he can collect okayish point totals when playing with elite players on a top PP unit (Radulov was on that CSKA team), but he can't drive shit himself. It appears that Lehtonen was able to drive the bus at the KHL level.

This is exactly what I want. Pile all of the elite talent onto the roster that we can and keep it for as long as possible. Draft with a massive bias towards skill, speed, IQ. Buy all of the euro free wallets and all of the Jason Spezza's, every summer.

Fucking freddy really fucked us this year.

And then covid strikes just as he's warming back up so now we have more endless months of false roster criticism. Really fucking annoying.

Marner and Tavares were bad contracts. Potentially crippling contracts.
Agree on Tavares - that has been my position since we signed him.

I would have agreed with you at the time Mucho signed his contract. But zekie has slowly been convincing me that this one may actually not be so bad.

And regardless, both are star level players. So if you're going to overpay anyone on your roster, at least let it be the stars.

I mean it's better than overpaying middling players, sure. But any kind of significant overpay can really screw the rest of your roster construction, regardless of where it comes from. The Marner contract essentially stopped us from being able to get a viable backup which IMO really screwed up the entire season.

I also thought Marner's AAV was high but I just find it awfully hard to get too upset about overpaying someone who's played at a 93 point pace for the last 140 games.

Especially if the guy who handed the contract out is going to keep drafting Robertsons and Sandins and signing Lehtonens and Spezzas for peanuts to supplement those big contracts with cheap skill.

I've been as vocal as anyone about not wanting JT, but even I'm willing to accept two things

1) He was worth the money in year 1
2) He sucked dick last year, but having a baby in the summer (with a wife who allegedly wouldn't allow a nanny) really fucks with off season training. He just looked weaker on the puck this year.

The guy has always been a hard working gud pro, so I'm hoping that the covid time is being well spent from a fitness standpoint. Because yeah, paying 11m a year to the ~20th best centre in hockey strikes me as a bad idea. We need him to be that top 10 centre he was from his first season for as long as possible. The last few seasons of the contract were always likely to suck.

Eh. Marner contract didn't force us to pay Ceci $4.5m.

Yeah, that was the major own goal of the off season. Maybe I just don't understand the process well enough, but there really seemed to be an opportunity to get rid of Ceci by walking away from him after an arby award. Spend that money on a backup goalie and we would have been ahead of the game.
