2019-20 Hurricanes Prospects and Checkers Thread

Good move for a number of reasons. Emergency recall for both presumed to keep them on Charlotte’s roster for the playoffs.

“We don’t need your stinking goalies” bargaining position.

Checkers this past week

Feb 21 @Binghamton L 2-1 Ned with the loss. Kaski with the goal.

Feb 22 @Binghamton W 6-3 Forsberg with the win (42 saves). Joey Keane, Lorentz x2, Bishop, Bean, and Kaski with the goals.

The very new look Checkers play 4 road games this week. Tue/Sun at Hershey and Fri/Sat at Lehigh Valley.

Checkers added 2 ECHL forwards via PTOs, 26 year old Blake Winiecki and 27 year old Mark Cooper. Not surprising with Gauthier, Kuokkanen and Luostarinen all dealt by the Canes with no AHL forwards coming back. Checkers are 4th in their division with games in hand. It will be interesting to see how they do with Booth and Helvig and no Priskie, Kuokkenan or Luostarinen. Hershey is the best team in the AHL Eastern conference, Lehigh Valley is one of the worst.

Checkers got smoked last night in their first game after the great purge. A 6-1 loss to division leading Hershey. Helvig allowed all of those goals (30 shots) and it was a real rough night for 4 forwards:

Max McCormick -6
Stelio Mattheos -5
Morgan Geekie -4

On the D side, Joey Keane was also -4, McKeown and Bean -3....

Kirill Slepets’ season is over. The regular season ended today and they didn’t make the playoffs. With no transfer agreement between the NHL and KHL, he won’t be coming to Charlotte on a PTO.

The Checkers might need some of our prospects to join on PTOs and ATOs with how thin the roster is now. It might be too late for the Checkers though by the time the likes of Jack Drury (assuming he leaves school after his season is over) or Matt Filipe (assuming we sign him) are available. I still think David Cotton is just flat out not going to sign with the Canes and end up signing an entry level deal with Dallas.

All of the current players in Charlotte are going to have to pull together if they are going to make the playoffs. Their blueline is still 'stocked' (relative to other AHL teams).

WTF, I have not seen this done in a long time.

He's not good, don't get your hopes up.

They’ve gotten him and Condon in the last few days. It’s probably temporary until Forsberg or Nedeljkovic get back. Was Kinkaid not playing at Laval?

Split timing. If he was they wouldn't have dumped him.

He was atrocious with the Habs.

Checkers this past week. Better get a program to know who is playing

Feb 25 @Hershey L 6-1 Jeremy Helvig with the loss. Geekie with the goal.

Feb 28 @Lehigh Valley L 5-3 Mike Condon (on loan) with the loss. Mark Cooper (PTO), McCormick and Bean with the goals.

Feb 29 @Lehigh Valley W 4-2 Callum Booth with the win. Lorentz, Cavan Fitzgerald, Blake Winiecki (PTO) and Kaski with the goals.

Mar 1 @Hershey W 6-3 Keith Kinkade (on loan) with the win. Lorentz, Mattheos x2 and Geekie x3 with the goals.

Back home this week for 2 games against Utica (Fri/Sat) Checkers sit in 4th in the division still, 6 points clear of 5th place Springfield (who has played 1 more game) and 6th place Wilkes-Barre (who has played 2 more games).

Jeremy Helvig was arrested in Orlando last night on a charge of battery (dating violence). It was after their game against the Solar Bears. No other Swamp Rabbits were arrested.

Presumably Helvig will end up suspended, pending further info. He's got another year on his contract after this one, so it's a little more complicated than just cutting him loose, should that prove the most prudent course. Either way, you guys know where I land on guys who get in physical conflagrations with women ... don't want 'em, don't need 'em, won't support 'em, don't really care how good or not good they are.
