GDT #1 - AUG 2 8pm SN - The Covid Cup is Ours

I'm not sure we're chokers either. you could only call the Leafs that if you think they are a top team that should wreck Columbus.

maybe we're just not as good as this board thought we were (myself included).

I wouldn't change my mind after one game

Yes because Arizona is where you go to win cups. Their ranking as 31st in operational budget and having almost no paid scouts and cutting payroll and losing 50 million a year is so enticing. Total John Tavares copy I tell you...

I don't think they have the money anyway...but it's no less ridiculous to go to the Leafs to win Cups.

Leafs do have to win this series no doubt. You don't wan to make panic moves, but you've got to start winning something.

Come on. Arizona reportedly is cutting payroll big time. they just played their first playoff game in 8 years thanks to COVID (If you consider it playoffs). They have no budget to run the team, a rather mediocre core right now and the owner's son is running things. Oh and their GM just left for a role which based on a title sounds like a move downweard, but got 3 or 4 times more money.

It's a trainwreck. If Leafs in 2018 were where Coyotees are now, Tavares wouldn't have even met with them.

Babcock held the Wings back. I'm not sold on this Keefe guy. Hyman should not be on the first line, and you have better players than Gauthier for the 4th line.

Can't really agree with the bolded. You can debate the general merits of having a "pick and shovel" type of player to complement elite offensive players, but I feel like Hyman scoring at a 24 goal/47-point pace last year and a 34-goal/59-point pace in 51 games this year should finally put to bed the question of whether or not Hyman "deserves" a spot in the top-6.

The other guys who've been tried there in his place (Johnsson & Kapanen) also haven't been better fits, and the other options are Kerfoot, who would create a hole at center on our third line if he was moved up, and an 18 year-old kid in Robertson.

Agreed that Freddie the Goat definitely shouldn't be in the lineup, though.

you're still mostly talking about money. I already said they don't have it.

I mean, if Matthews going "home" to Arizona is apparently a foregone conclusion, then Connor McDavid must be coming "home" to Toronto when his contract's up a year or two after Matthews'. So who cares?

Yeah I'm not sure where this idea came from that they're some super elite top tier team. They're not. You may think they should be based on their talent but they haven't played like it for any lengthy stretch in the past couple of years. When they get to that level of play we'll know. Zeke will be guaranteeing dynasties and shit.

But for now I see them in the second tier. Comparable to a whole bunch if teams from like 6-15th in the NHL. Very little separates them. Maybe they SHOULD be better but that's our own expectations getting in the way of what we've seen as the reality. So no, one game didn't change that for me. I dont do one game samples. It's been my stance for a long time.

Eventually a core piece will likely get traded, not in a rush based on this series if it doesn’t go out way. The raps are an example for us that eventually you’ll need to find the right guys that can be contributing (not just like Clifford or Spezza on our fourth line) that have experience winning etc. And we had to give up two really talented guys that had been with us for a long time in JV and the kyle’s bestie to do it

Don’t think we are ready or at that stage yet though. Let it play out. Super keen to see what adjustments are made and how our top guys bounce back from the loss.

Money is the #1 problem for them for half a century. They exists because of revenue sharing. They can't win anything until they fix their finances. Same with Florida. Players don't go there to win. Despite the great "golf" I hear they never really sign any significant free agents.

The whole issue is if Leafs offer Matthews a massive deal a year before he's UFA he's going to take it history tells us. It's a massive risk to play and year and walk away from guaranteed money.

Zeke cares. He thinks Matthews is way better than McDavid because McDavid wasn't good at 5 on 5 in a particular game.

I can't wait for the Markham Magic to get an expansion team. They will sign Matthews and McDavid. #bigsplash

Expecting the leafs to suddenly turn into a top tier Boston caliber team without any fundamental change reminds of retail investors continuing to bang their heads against the wall buying aphria and circle jerking each other because its soooooo "undervalued." But the stock never actually performs as they believe it should.

But anyway, Columbus is more at their level. I think the leafs are a bit better but most games will basically be 50-50 (very little separates teams in that second tier really). With the series lead, Columbus are heavy favorites now of course.

I think replacing an old school coach with a new schooler better aligned with the roster construction is a big fundamental change.

I guess I'm of the opinion that playing an even as fuck game after a 5 months layoff, decided by a bad goal isn't the best way to gauge how good they are? I hate to give Presto much credit, but he's right that last night was a goofy coin flip of a game.
