Meh. They're a bit better than us, they came ready to play, they were at home... and we were mediocre at best. Move on. At least the Islanders lost too, although the Bruins did us no favors after leading.
First period penalties killed us, RBA had no chance to get any cohesive flow going. As Tripp pointed out, Haula played less than 3 minutes in the period. Mrazek kept us in the game but would probably want Ovechkin’s 2nd goal back. Even so, only 23 shots on Samsonov. Staal’s line only had 1 shot, from Foegele in the 3rd. Only 3 shots from Haula’s line, none from Dzingel. No shots from Nino. Only 6 shots on the 3 power plays and 3 were from Hamilton. No matter how good the goalie is, you can’t win like that.
I thought that game was lost in the first period when the Canes had about 3 grade A scoring chances in close and they did not capitalize on any of them. Get the lead early on any of those chances and things could have been much different.
Sums it up nicely. They didn't play all that badly, but the Canes need a much better effort than that to beat Washington on the road ... especially when Caps come out all frisky and fired up like that. That's one you take on the chin and then move on.
