OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

Pretty good article on Jays Journal today suggesting that trading for Garza doesn't make sense for the Blue Jays:

Though the Cubs won’t be able to fetch a package this winter similar to what they initially paid for Garza given he now has two years of service time remaining, that hasn’t stopped rumors from circulating that not only are the Cubs seeking young starting pitching in return, but they are also eyeing Blue Jays minor league center fielders Anthony Gose and Jake Marisnick.

Assuming that one of the Jays’ top pitching prospects would represent the other main component of the deal, names like Drew Hutchison, Noah Syndergaard, Justin Nicolino, and Kyle Drabek come to mind. A package consisting of even just one of those hurlers and either Gose or Marisnick is enough to raise a few eyebrows, and if the Cubs’ asking price is as incredibly high as it is rumored to be, they would surely be asking for an additional player to round out the package, likely one that is farther away from the Majors.

Assuming they don’t sign new contracts with their respective clubs, Matt Cain, Zack Greinke, Cole Hamels, and Jake Peavy will lead the 2012 free agent class of starting pitchers, with other intriguing names like Brandon McCarthy, Anibal Sanchez, and Francisco Liriano in that hefty group as well. Given the wealth of talent available just one year from now, it hardly makes sense for the Jays to ship out coveted prospects to the Cubs to acquire Garza.

Yes he is.

It's pretty exciting that it is even a debate though, because Gose is an incredible prospect.

One thing about Gose from last year though is that the Jays essentially took away one of his great tools at the plate by not allowing him to try and slap singles to the outfield, bunt for base hits or shorten up his swing with two strikes. They really took last year as a year to beat into his brain that he has a lot of untapped power. As he develops I think his power numbers this year will stay relatively the same but I think his OBP will go way up whether he's in New Hampshire or Vegas.

Marisnick had a major breakout this year though as well, but with both guys being so young I'd hate to part with either of them. Especially if one was paired with Drabek/McGuire/Hutch/etc for Garza. I would be really pissed if that were to happen.

Sources tell Olney that the Blue Jays are much more likely to hold or even cut their payroll rather than increase it.

That would be sweet. The old bugger can still pitch.

Gave up 3 HR's last year in 200 AB.

vs lefties in 2011- .227 avg, .269 obp, .587 ops.

Well...aside Fielder....is there really an FA worth spending on?

And seems to me any SP we add would be vis trade and would be cost controlled.

I never bought into the Oswalt on a 1 year or 5/50 for Edwin Jackson

Oliver has averaged a 2.52 era, 8.4 k/9, 3.6 k per bb, 177 era+ and a 1.126 whip over the last three years.

What a great pickup for the Jays who badly need a reliable, left handed veteran out of the pen.

Santos
Janssen
Oliver
Litsch
Villanueva
Perez
etc

Starting to look good.

Edit- Starting to look ****ing good.

Jays close to signing Darren Oliver.

Very nice. That should help to somewhat make up from the departure of Scrabble last season.

We badly needed another reliable left-handed arm in the pen so things are starting to look up judging by the current composition o the pen. A nice mixture of power and control, youth and veterans, experience and fresh faces.

Did we put money on the Jays getting another starter? I recall you getting pissy with me when I said look for them to stand pat.

You recall incorrectly, if you thought I got "pissy" (or that there was a monetary wager made)......but I absolutely believed, and still do, that the Jays will add a starter.
