OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

I assume the Cubs want a package built around Henderson Alvarez and Kyle Drabek.

If you trust the media at all. This is from ESPN Chicago.

here's a Chicago writer's take:

"Toronto’s No. 1 pick from 2010, right-hander Deck McGuire, will be the focal point of any negotiations between the Cubs and Jays. The 22-year-old pitcher was a combined 9-5 at three different minor-league levels in 2011. The Blue Jays are convinced he’s near major-league ready.

The Cubs will also inquire about the availabilities of left-handed pitcher Justin Nicolino and power-hitting outfielder Jake Marisnick. Nicolino, a 20-year-old pitcher, was 6-2 with a 1.33 ERA at two minor league levels last season. He allowed just 39 hits in 61 innings. Marisnick is considered a five-tool prospect and hit 14 homers at the lower-A level last year."

dont mind giving up Deck and one of Nicolono and Marisnick, not both though

not sure if they allow it any more but we need that 72hr window to sign an extension before we complete the trade.

something similar to what Romero got, covers 2 years of arb and maybe 3 years of FA

I'd honestly really prefer not to give up McGuire. He has all of the tools necessary for being a top two starter in any rotation (excellent long, lean size, athleticism, a good hard fastball, composure on the mound, and good control) while being close to MLB-ready at the same time.

McGuire is controllable for a longer period of time than Garza and, while I can respect that Chicago will need some elite/borderline elite components to warrant parting with a reasonably young, proven AL East starter like Garza, we still have to be thinking long-term here. McGuire could be just as good as Garza very soon and at a significantly reduced price.

Marisnick is an interesting idea but the Jays do not have a premium of positional players in the minor leagues at the moment. Gose and D'Arnaud are probably our two best pieces there by a fairly large margin, so our positional depth would be taking a big hit if we dealt him and I just don't think we have the ability prospect-wise to incur that cost at the moment.

Well, Jonas began the negotiations by offering Kyle Drabek, Henderson Alvarez, prospects and our 1992 World Series to the Cubs. This deal seems to be a lot more reasonable, obviously we will have to give up something. I would like to do what I can to keep Marisnick out of there, other than that I'd be willing to sign on.

To be fair i never offered it...its what i assuemd that the Cubs would ask for....

McGuire, Nicolino and Marisnick seems fair when you consider what Gio, by all accounts a lesser pitcher went for

Marisnick>Gose. I would like to keep them both, but would perfer to switch those two if possible.

Garza was my prime target since the season ended because I knew the Cubs were going to want to rebuild. I'm not holding my breath, but it would be nice.

I wouldn't want either of Gose or Marisnick included in a deal for Garza. If SP spects are what they are looking for, offer them McGuire, Nicolino and a couple low level guys none of us have ever heard of.

yeah if they're giving up a few of their high level arms no need to give one of their top five bats.

a guy like knecht might be a suitable third piece.

No clue to be quite honest, but my gut feeling is he's acquired for cheaper than his actual value.....similar to the Santos trade.
