OT: American Politics

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

The most important thing is why is Daniel Dale, or whomever Milhouse-look alike is, so afraid of Rob Ford? Never been in a confrontation in your life before, Danny?

Not sure if you've read much of what he [Dale] wrote on it (not trying to be condescending, actually unsure), but yeah, Dale's never been in any sort of fight or confrontation before. His words were something along the lines of "Boyz II Men singing former valedictorian geeky guy". He basically said he's not ashamed to be considered a wuss in this situation.

And I mean, it's not a stretch to see how a red-in-the-face 300+lb former football player charging at you with his fist cocked would be a little intimidating.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

I still don't understand the Star's obsession with Rob Ford. To the casual observer it just appears to petty and unprofessional. It goes beyond the normal criticism of government officials and is intensely personal. Calling him out on his foolish transit plan was fine: that's the sort of thing that elected personnel should be held accountable for (after all, it's our tax dollars at work) but who honestly cares if he wants to purchase some additional property? That doesn't affect anyone else.

And given the threats that he has received and the badgering from reporters around his property in the past I can see why Ford might be prone to getting angry or over-reacting in the aforementioned situation. He's been lambasted by that publication from day one without even being given the benefit of the doubt that all new officials should be given. Why does Daniel Dale care about Ford purchasing a few feet of additional grass?

It's kind of like the weird obsession KB has developed for your left wing socialist views.

What a dreamboat.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

you need to spend less time building straw men and more time thinking for yourself rather than what your fellow ideologues tell you.

LOL! Not much of a shot considering that I'm considered an evil social liberal on right leaning forums and an evil right winger on left leaning forums.

Regardless, you're paddling down the gutter when you justify and excuse that kind of journalism.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Ford feeds into it because he takes himself too seriously, which makes it all even funnier. If he sort of laughed it all off, the media would get bored and move on.

Not to say that the media is 100% fault-free, but Ford should know better at this point.

I agree. The fact that Ford is a crybaby and has no media skills to speak of doesn't endear himself to the masses, but at the same time the news organizations should conduct themselves with a smidgeon more professionalism to say the least. It wouldn't be too hard not to irritate the guy at his own house. Leave the personal stuff at the office and allow people to be free from intrusions when they are in their private lives.

Dale was photographing public land. He was on public land. He was doing his job following up a news story.

It became personal when Ford went out, confronted him, and allegedly insisted he hand over his phone and recorder. Ford initiated that.

If Ford is trying to buy public land, it's unreasonable to not expect any scrutiny, especially seeing as buying land from the TRCA is rare.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Why is him wanting to buy a few additional square feet of property such a big deal, beyond the personal vendetta The Star has against him? How is it a legitimate news story in any sense?

It's certainly not front page material. It's barely the type of mention that one would anticipate on page 16.

I agree with you that it's a nothing story. However, it is still newsworthy, and Dale was well within his rights reporting on it.

And it's a story because a) Ford is trying to buy land that is technically owned collectively by the citizens of the city, so they do have a stake in the deal, and b) very rarely do people apply to buy land from the TRCA, plus c) if Ford is successful in purchasing the land to put up a security fence, what are the implications in future for private citizens wanting to buy TRCA land for personal use?

So I guess my stance on the issue is something along these lines: do I think the Star was wasting their time reporting on something like this? Sure. Do I think, despite my personal opinion, it's a legitimate news story? Yes.

And none of that changes the fact that Dale was on public land, taking pictures of public land, when he was confronted and allegedly cornered and threatened by the mayor of the city.

Regardless of your stance on the newsworthiness of the story to begin with, this blew up because of Ford's response and reaction. Otherwise it wouldn't be a front page story.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Oh, and to add to the newsworthiness of this...

The TRCA hasn't sold a parcel of public land to a private citizen in over 20 years. So, while this probably isn't front-page material, it's definitely newsworthy. I got that from the Globe as well, who are also reporting on this.

I'm not saying that I don't think Ford is a blowhard and I'm not saying that he doesn't possess an absolutely awful ability when it comes to handling the media. I don't know if anyone else could even TRY to screw up with reporters as bad as Ford consistently does. He comes across as aloof, disinterested, and then occasionally downright nasty when they push the right buttons. At the same time though, I really, really don't understand half the vitriol the man gets. If Torontonians want to bemoan about the fact that Ford got elected I think we need to take a lengthy, introspective look at ourselves and wonder why the top three mayoral candidates for one of the great cosmopolitan centres of the world were so piss poor.
