Out of Town Scoreboard

It is true that Ottawa's the only team that can offer him 8 though. But I'd say if the team I was with offered me 7 then I'd be more likely to test the UFA market.

I wouldn't be surprised if he was offered and took an 8 year deal from Ottawa.

I'm just making the point that not ever player elects to take maximum length deals.

They won't be able to get him signed on a bargain contract. If they do, they'll have to break out the big boy money.
They've got the space - and despite Melnyk being a dink - they've got the cash.

I highly doubt they don't take a massive run at keeping the guy considering the assets they traded to get him.

like who? Karlsson, for reasons I already explained, is a bad example. The longer his contract, the more of his UFA years it eats up. He could be looking at a 10+ million dollar, 8 year deal when he's finished this current one. It would have been silly for him to sign anything longer than what he did.

I think most players will take the longer deal given the choice. The reason they don't always take the longer deal is that they can get more money on a short term deal if the team has certain concerns about them.

In a sport with so many risks of a career ending (or hampering) injury a player should always be looking for the security of a long term deal.

It's the inconsistency of these calls/non-calls by the league head office that are so maddening. If there was a degree of consistency to the suspensions handed down, few if any fans would have an issue with their decisions.

But there are not. It's like they simply throw a dart at a board with suspension lengths listed and decide what to go with where the end hits.
