Out of Town Scoreboard

The History of Hockey section on The Other Forum generally will exclude 99's and 66's accomplishments when talking about top-tier players from that era simply because of the unfair factor involved in judging everyone else with them.

So for instance, in 1989 they will give Yzerman a retroactive Art Ross Trophy win for that year. It's obscene how much better than everyone else Gretzky and Lemieux were.

I see. So tell me, were those retroactive awards delivered on Unicorns?

yup.

considering the disparity in scoring eras, that's astonishing.

Here's a stat to put it in perspective:

Adjusted Points per game

Crosby 1.74
Lemieux 1.68
Gretzky 1.66
Ovechkin 1.49
Malkin 1.49
Forsberg 1.38
Jagr 1.34
Orr 1.33
Howe 1.24
Lindros 1.23

Note: there may be others missing from this top 10 - there's no actual list of this stat.

Note II: Sid, Ovie, Malkin are in their primes, and haven't had to play through their decline years yet.
Yeah exactly... unless they "decline" like St.Louis they will definitely fall below Wayne and Mario.

and nice to see comfirmation of something I've always believed......

Lemieux > Gretzky

Not to say that this is or isn't true... Mario never did play through as much of his decline as Wayne did. Injuries not only cut off a lot of his prime it also cut off a good chunk of his decline.

well, not really a great point actually, since it's not true.

Gretzky played until he was 37, Mario played until he was 40.

Mario got cut down in his prime, though. From the 6 peak prime years ages 24-29 he played game totals of 59-26-64-60-22-00. Just crushed his peak prime.

And he was still in his prime when he retired for 3yrs due to cancer. The year before he left, at age 31, he scored at a 132pt pace. The year he returned, at age 35, he scored at a 145pt pace. So those were still 3 prime years he missed at ages 32-34.

If we look at Adjusted Points Per Game per Season:

Lemieux (17yrs): 2.23, 2.17, 2.15, 1.91, 1.83, 1.81, 1.75, 1.67, 1.54, 1.52, 1.50, 1.46, 1.44, 1.39, 1.08, 1.00, 0.81
Gretzky (20yrs): 2.20, 2.13, 2.08, 1.99, 1.96, 1.95, 1.94, 1.87, 1.78, 1.73, 1.64, 1.59, 1.48, 1.47, 1.46, 1.26, 1.23, 1.21, 1.16, 1.00

As for the prime years he missed completely.

Age 28: 1.50
Age 29: missed
Age 30: 2.23

Age 31: 1.67
Age 32: missed
Age 33: missed
Age 34: missed
Age 35: 1.91

So you're probably looking at 4yrs years in the 1.7-2.0 range that he missed completely.

I would tend to think Gretzky might've been have some 'primo years' reduced by that cheapshot hit by Gary Suter (who also shortened Paul Kariya's career by another cheapshot hit).

And it was so hard to see only one angle kind of caught it.

The guy is 6'5, and there is a good chance that it was incidental contact.

Really if you want the Sens punished, leave him in the lineup.

I'm not so sure how much I like this new, self loathing Johnny & Corksens.

Though Sensible not being around so much is definitely a plus.
