Out of Town Scoreboard

Another discussion on the Habs board that I'd be interested in seeing some opinions on. Who's the better undrafted player? Peter Stastny vs. Marty St. Louis. I know it's tough to compare players from different generations.

St. Louis.

Adjusted for era:

St.Louis - 1000 gp, 421 gls, 1118 pts
Stastny - 977 gp, 364 gls, 1001 pts.

Plus the fact that St. Louis is a midget makes him more impressive IMO. Plus St. Louis won 2 Art Ross Trophys, a Hart and a Pearson/Lindsay.

I picked St.Louis as well. I think it's close, but I used the same arguments about the awards. Stastny was a great player but at no point was he ever considered the best or even in consideration for best player in the league in a given year, or close to the leading scorer let alone winning a Hart and 2 Art Ross trophies.

And if you think about it, not only has St. Louis been the best player in the league before. But he did it in the dead puck era at 5'6 160. There are a lot more small guys around now, but during that era those guys were few and far between. And not only was he good enough to hack it. He was good enough to be the best.

Figured I'd do a little research for some fun and to satisfy my curiosity. Here is each player's league rank in scoring each year.

Stastny: Started in the NHL at 24 years old
Age/Rank
24/6th
25/3rd
26/2nd
27/4th
28/16th
29/6th
30/29th
31/6th
32/25th
33/52nd
34/68th
35/72nd
36/178th

Stastny only played a few games in the next couple seasons before retiring.

St.Louis: First full NHL season he was 25.
25/150th
26/185th
27/28th
28/1st
29/Lockout
30/76th
31/5th
32/14th
33/16th
34/6th
35/2nd
36/18th
37/1st

That doesn't tell us anything definitive other than the fact that Stastny was better younger and St.Louis was better later.

I have no problem with St. Louis, he's a very good player, I go for the Franchise Center.

Top-10 Scoring finishes:

Stastny (6 of 15yrs): #2, #3, #4, #5, #6, #6

Stastny (6 of 15yrs): #2, #3, #5, #6, #7, #8
St.Louis (5 of 14yrs): #2, #3, #3, #7, #9

Top-10 Adjusted Points finishes:

Stastny (6 of 15yrs): 102, 100, 96, 94, 92, 84
St.Louis (5 of 14yrs): 114, 109, 107, 104, 100

St. Louis has been able to stay healthy in his 30's too. Stastny not so much. Marty is in phenomenal shape.

Not taking anything away from Marty. He's great. I think Stastny was better defensively though. With numbers being comparable I still go with the center.

St. Louis wouldn't have won any trophies playing when Gretzky and Lemieux did.

As I posted on the Habs board. If you remove Gretzky and Lemieux from the record books Stastny would have had 1 Art Ross. St.Louis has 2.
