Re: GDT - Caps @ Leafs First post-Carlyle-era game | 7:00PM EST TSN

First actually interesting game of the season after the home opener.

Re: GDT - Caps @ Leafs First post-Carlyle-era game | 7:00PM EST TSN

I hope Uncle Leo puts Ovie through the glass....by mistake.

This is the one game where I regret we don't have goons. It'd be pretty nice to see an Orr or McLaren give Ovie a heavy shot to the back of the head.

Re: GDT - Caps @ Leafs First post-Carlyle-era game | 7:00PM EST TSN

Leo will get his.

Re: GDT - Caps @ Leafs First post-Carlyle-era game | 7:00PM EST TSN

Love how first game Carlyle is gone we get Kadri/Kessel at ES

Re: GDT - Caps @ Leafs First post-Carlyle-era game | 7:00PM EST TSN

Ideally I'd much rather JVR and Bozak play on different lines, but that's tough without Lup and Holland. JVR and Bozak can both be very lazy defensively, but at least without Kessel they seem to work harder and less opportunistic.

It is sad under Carlyle, Kadri and Winnik are the only 2 forwards with a >50% possession ... but it's no coincidence they're now on the 1st line.

The Caps incidentally are a nice example let of what a coach can do to a team's possession:

Boudreau

07/08: 55.6cf% (2nd)
08/09: 54.9cf% (4th)
09/10: 52.9cf% (3rd)
10/11: 51.2cf% (12th)

Hunter

11-12: 48.9cf% (19th)

Oates

12/13: 48.7cf% (21st)
13/14: 47.7cf% (24th)

Trotz

14/15: 51.4cf% (12th)

And the roster has been remarkably consistent over that time.

Boudreau may have lost the room, but it was still probably dumb to fire him.

Hunter was just interim, but hiring unqualified Oates was a disaster.

They seem to have corrected their mistakes by hiring a proven possession coach in trotz.

Incidentally, we could have hired trotz but re-signed randy instead.

I remember in the summer almost no one on this board wanted Trotz, citing that he would be more of the same of what we have in Carlyle.

I wasn't sure what Trotz was....he'd been with Nashville so long it was hard to tell what he did.

Actually, it's not true that no one wanted Trotz. In the Official Fire Randy Carlyle Thread last summer someone posted the news he was available. In the posts that followed...

WaywardDP, Trujaysfan said yes. Deckie defended Trotz against the nays. Mbow said he liked Trotz but didn't exactly commit.

Leafman, LoF, TimHorton, Pronger, Blacksheep were emphatic nos.

I remember being open to Trotz but can't find where that discussion was.

Well if Corsi is how we are measing coach success:

Nashville Corsi:
2014-15: 52.4% (7th) - (no Trotz)
2013-14: 49.4 (23rd)
2012-13: 46.7 (27th)
2011-12: 46.6 (29th)
2010-11: 49.1 (20th)
2009-10: 51.5 (11th)
2008-09: 49.2 (17th)
2007-08: 50.5 (14th)

Perhaps possession isn't all coaching. or maybe its just a small sample size in Washington. Either way, proven possession coach he is not.

Can't remember what I thought at the time. But I wouldn't have opposed the idea, I don't think.

I was surprised by how many people didn't want him. Thats the only reason why i mention it.

Moot point as he is not available.

It'll be interesting to see what happens the rest of the way this season. If nothing changes and we fall off, their will be nothing to blame but the players. Well Nonis i guess, but i already think he's a lameduck.

I am really excited to see Kadri as a first line centre and hope that they keep him there for the rest of the year. We NEED him to be a true first liner. Give him real look this time.
