OT: American Politics

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

With this result, I'm left wondering if the Harper era would have happened at all if the Liberals weren't running Dion & Ignatieff out as candidates? The country was really willing to jump back into bed with the first charismatic Liberal leader we've had since Uncle Jean.

Or did it take 9 years of Harper being the cranky accountant in chief to turn people off of the CPC?

I don't think the CPC would have lasted longer than a single minority government if the LPC had chosen anybody but Dion or Ignatieff.
That said, CPC micromanaging has cemented the majority LPC tonight.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

In the end, he never had the conservative chops to get it done. Conservative is not the same as cynical. Harper conflated the two.

The kicker is...he could have gotten his energy policy stuff handled (pipelines) had he not completely balked at climate change. Alberta already has a ****ing carbon tax...ratcheting that up a bit in exchange for 3 pipes would have been considered a very fair trade by my industry.

But he had to go full Harper on it. Squash all opposition, bury contrary evidence, etc. No finesse, all brute force.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Harper and his cabal of ideologues wedge issued themselves to defeat. They couldn't compromise with Red Tories, and shrunk the size of the tent.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Im looking forward to harper's speech, however while I full expect him to resign as the leader of the conservative, I would be shocked if he resigned his seat. Right now, parliamentary privilege is all that's preventing from being called at the Duffy trial.

Now, if Trudeau wanted to totally destroy him, he would not call the house back into session till December or January, which would then allow Stevie to be subpoenaed.

The Trump SNL spot next week will seal the deal and he and Trudeau will be tag team champs by 16

Jennifer Ditchburn
CP ALERT: Stephen Harper to resign as leader, will continue as MP. Caucus will select interim leader. Leadership committee to be struck.

Very good point.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Then in a shocking turn, Justin regrows the french soul patch, turns heel and hit trump with a chair shot.

Leading to the inevitable cage match with Trump bringing in special guest manager, Stephen Harper, who of course promises he will not intervene.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

This is a slaughter. In one night, Justin Trudeau has completely smashed and reshaped the Canadian political landscape.

2 leaders on their way out, the NDP absolutely demolished back to 2006 levels, the Conservatives beat back to the west with Harper decimated.

Just wow.
