GDT - Auston vs Connor Round 1 | 7:30 TSN4

number17

Mod Squad
Leafs have lost 2 games in a row, 1 game where they've played as well as they have all season as a team (IMO anyways) and the other where they played like crap.

EDM was on a roll but was stopped in Ottawa. They sure want to get back on winning side of thigns

Auston and McDavid were linemates at the World, this is the first time they play each other in the NHL. This is also the first time in his career that hometown boy Connor plays in the ACC vs. the Leafs.

All these make for a good story, but it's important we play our own game tonight.

A few things to watch out for tonight ...

- Andersen had a very good game vs. Price in the loss, let's see how he does tonight

- Bozak and JVR were absolutely terrible defensively (and overall) in the NYI game, and were called out by Babs. How will they respond?

- Marner was removed from the Bozak line and moved to Kadri's line in the 2nd half of last game ... will he stick?

- Polak has been terrible, will Corrado finally get a start?

- Our Conor has been playing pretty good too, exceeding most expectation leading the team in TOI in the NYI Game ... will he lead the team in TOI again?

Can't wait till we drop the puck tonight! Go Leafs Go

This week could be a big indicator of where this team is going this year. We're up against three very beatable opponents---Edmonton, Buffalo & Vancouver. If we're going to stay within striking distance of a playoff spot rather than sinking to the bottom of the league, this is the kind of week where we need to come away with a minimum of two wins.

5 pts for McDavid? Might as well keep pace with the rest of the TO boys who come in and rape us every time they play here

Oh and this beauty popped into my timeline this morning

Is Matthews hitting a wall?

Only took 10 games for this to start

I'm all for playing Sosh as long as Ben Smith gets scratched and not Seth Griffith.

Looks like it will be Sosh over Griffith though.

Frankie Corrado is paired with Morgan Rielly in line rushes. Looks like he's finally in for the #leafs.

From press box to top pair. Seems fair...

EDIT: nvm I think he's out. He's just rotating. Seems like the same lineup as last game.

Pleased to see Soshnikov called up. Quite like his game and potential upside.

Not happy if they bump Griffith rather than the tool Smith who has been awful ever since coming in. Waive him, please.

Also, looks like Babs is going with Marner with the two stooges again. A bit pissed to see this. Put him with Kadri!

The Leafs really need to win this game. Bozak and JVR better turn their game around. I have been hating watching these two float around making dumb plays and often bumbling Marner's playmaking.

Leaf lines in practice:

Zach Hyman - Auston Matthews - William Nylander
Leo Komarov - Nazem Kadri - Connor Brown
James van Riemsdyk - Tyler Bozak - Mitch Marner
Matt Martin - Ben Smith - Nikita Soshnikov

I guess "Marner on Kadri's line" and "Griffith in the lineup" were short-lived experiments.

Ben Smith has been awful, no idea why he draws in
This is kind of where it shows that, as an organization, we're loaded with depth on the wing, but we've got pretty much no depth at center.

Because if Smith's the guy Soshnikov replaces in the lineup, you have no one to center the fourth line. And the only other alternatives to Smith at this point are Peter Holland, who Babcock is less than enthusiastic about for good reason. And then there's Brooks Laich, who played at center for us a bit last year but is really a winger at this stage of his career.

Seems to me that the only other options right now are calling up Freddie the Goat, or moving Willie back to the middle & pushing Bozak down to the 4th line center spot.

I see no problem moving Willie to the middle

This was the one complaint about him in Detroit also. He played guys like Glenndenning, Cleary and Miller even when they had kids like Nyquist, Tatar and Pulkinen in the AHL.

At least its one or two guys rather than half the team like Burke/Carlyle's "bottom 6".

Yep, works for me:

Nikita Soshnikov - Auston Matthews - Mitch Marner
James van Riemsdyk - William Nylander - Connor Brown
Zach Hyman - Nazem Kadri - Seth Griffith
Matt Martin - Tyler Bozak - Leo Komarov

...and you can substitute in Leipsic, Kapanen or Leivo for whatever wingers that aren't pulling their weight.

What are the final D pairings for tonight?

Wonder if Corrado will really be paired with Rielly, makes no sense he hasn't played at all this season and the first game he's back he's on the 1st unit.

Just get Hyman off the top line already, put Marner with Kadri, Griffith over Smith, separate Bozak from JVR and drop him down.

It's not that difficult.
