The 2019-2020 MotherFucking Season Thread

Lehner, Kuemper, Jarry, Bishop, Georgiev.

Lehner and Big G can definitely be had in trade. The latter only to not have to face him and have him do his best Hasek impersonation against us every year.

Jarry has about the smallest sample conceivable. Hardly something you can count on to be sustained.

Bishop has had two great seasons of stats, but both without a full starter’s load so far. Prior years are very up and down. He’s also 33.

Georgiev hasn’t done anything Andersen hasn’t done. Just while a backup.

Kuemper looks good these last two years. Before that? Spotty. They’re not trading him.

And Lehner comes with his own risks. He could be had for sure, but I wouldn’t be so quick to hand over the reins to him.

You’re not going to find some magical goalie who is superb every game. And if you do, it will cost you, if he’s available at all. Goalies will lose you games just like other players. Andersen is a great goalie, but he’s not going to bring his A game every night.

Put any goalie in Anderson's spot not named hasek, brodeur or price and their stats will hang heavy.

Leafs can neither afford nor have the players available to trade for a top end goalie.

Anderson has played like shit the past few games .... but Matthew's sucked for quite a few games .... reilly has sucked almost the whole season and nylander just decide to pop in and play like he is being paid .... yet very little commenting about their effort or play.

Funny how many on this site pander to nylander even though he has played many many more bad games then anderson ....

Matthew's has shown a few times this season that his indifferent play can be aggravating.

Jt has a bad spell and many are back on the ship of " it being a mistake by signing him".

But anderson like JT, has a bad spell, and he is garbage.

Dermott is a puck turnover machine and everyone sings his praises.

Anderson is fine and the best the leafs can hope for at this time.

I would also like to comment that many of those goalies mentioned earlier have a team that prides itself on their defensive play .... wonder how Anderson would fair on one of those teams.

If anderson ever goes down with an injury, this team will be a lottery team.

Jmho

Andy is a good goalie, not a great one.

It would be nice if for once the hockey world wouldn't overrate the impact of leafs goalies more than every other team's.

I don't think anybody is expecting some magical goalie who is great every game.

The Leafs need another goalie who can take some starts away from Anderson. Ideally one who can be signed for cheap who can be a 1B type as that has been the trend the league has gone in for a few years now. The competition and load management aspect has been working for other successful teams. Anderson is a good goalie but he is not elite. We have a higher chance of getting more consistently good goaltending with a better tandem, and we sure as hell need good goaltending more often than not with the way we have been playing hockey in the last week or so. Having an average starter isn't going to cut it for this squad.

This is toronto where all of our D are constantly trash and our goalies are gods gift to hockey... remember when toskala was considered a top 10 goalie

.900 or less in 6 of his last 10 starts

He will break out of it as usual but we are just seeing his typical down trend at the moment

Rask is .923 this year, but only better than .915 in one of the previous four seasons.

Holtby is .904, .911, .907 the last three seasons and won a cup in one of them.

Vasilevsky, who I think is probably the best goalie, is rocking a .908 this year after posting .920 and .925 the prior two seasons.

Bobrovsky, fresh off his $10m contract is at .899, after only posting .913 last year. He’s been above .920 only twice is the last five seasons.

So what’s not to like about Freddy’s consistent .917/.918 the prior three seasons and his .914 right now which has dipped because of the recent down streak? If you take away all the names mentioned today and just look at the numbers, isn’t Freddy the best, especially considering he sees more rubber than anyone because, let’s face it, we aren’t exactly airtight in our own zone. He’s never leading the league but he’s also never shitting the bed like some of the others do in one or two seasons out of five. He’s kind of awesome, and we have to forgive those blips where he’s not amazing.

I agree.

The issue is exactly what you said. We are not airtight in our own zone, so an average guy like Freddy who is prone to prolonged dips is not the best goalie for this group, especially with no viable alternative for the times when he is struggling.

He’s not average. Every year is a merry go round of SV% leaders. One year a guy is .908, the next he’s .920. There’s a good argument to be made that the guy who’s literally always .918, despite being the busiest one of the bunch, is actually the best one. It’s not like there’s five or ten goalie who are always .920 or higher every season.

isn’t Freddy the best

No

By the numbers, Freddy is exactly what a bunch of us have said that he is. A good, durable starting goalie. Not a star, not a superstar, just good.

If you're looking for the best goalies in the league over the last 2 seasons, it's Bishop, Lehner, Kuemper, and Binnington.

Freddy is fine.

Not a lot of dependably better goalies out there that would make it worth giving up serious assets or capspace to imo.

Of course, everything changes when it comes to re-sign him.

Resigning him is a different issue. He’ll be 32 and who knows what dollars and term he’ll demand. And how he’s fared in the postseason at that time.
