Habs Acquire Joel Edmundson

If you like a 2yr deal, you’re gonna LOVE 4 yrs. barf

This tread looks like Chairots thread when he signed here. That worked out fine so i imagine this will as well. A pleasant surprise

I’m fine with Edmundson if he plays on the bottom pair. But would be pretty disappointed if the idea is to play him with Petry

He had a big swing & miss on Alzner, connected on Chiarot, why not give it another shot for a low ceiling LHD... I mean, that's what we've been looking for since Markov left, hasn't it?

You can’t commit money and term to a 3rd pairing Dman and have a winner long term

I've never understood the fascination with giving money and term to bottom of the lineup players. Especially term.

The only exception would be a third line center. Everything else, bottom pairing d-man or 3rd or 4th line player, I would never sign to more than two seasons.

The amount of roster turnover from year to year is (if my memory serves me right) around 15 to 20%. So around 4 to 5 players that were there at the end of the previous season will no longer be on the team and the majority of the time, they're the bottom of the lineup players. I don't remember who our fourth line & the 13th + 14th player from the 2018-2019 season were, but I think the only one remaining at the end of this season was Hudon?

What happens when you give term to bottom of the lineup players? You're stuck with them. Bottom of the lineup players get term at one point in their careers: Unrestricted Free Agency. It's their one and only time to cash in to make their wealth. See Weise, Alzner, Prust, etc

It's also right around the time they're at their peak in the middle-to-late 20s and right around the time most of them see their play tumble down the mountain.

Sometime you're able to trade them, see the Prust for Weise trade, but more often than not, you're just going to have to wait it out with an underperforming player who is taking up a roster spot that could be better used on a younger player.

I agree that more than 2 seasons is asking for trouble but something a certain bottom player is in high demand and offering term makes the difference between your team signing him, or another team. Now I don't think Edmundson is that type of player.

But for what it's worth, my Blues fan friend likes him, solid defensively.

So we have so many dmen prospects/youth and we still go out and trade for a depth dmen, and now are looking to sign him for over 2 years term ?

That in a nutshell is why this team has never developed their youth properly...at some point you gotta throw the young guys into action so they learn. Your depth dmen should come from your farm, not UFA...

The org clearly doesn’t view him as a 3rd pairing Dman and all this talk of term & $ is pure speculation - just as MB player movement is held very close to the vest and comes out of left field, I can’t recall a player contract that anyone predicted correctly.

Norlinder, Struble etc. are at least 3-4 years away from assuming regular NHL starting gigs....if they even pan out
