Around the League 2019-2025 Edition

Carey Price’s enduring reputation really is incredible to me. We’re now five years removed from him being a stud in back-to-back years in 2013/14 & 2014/15.

Since then:

2015/16: Missed all but 12 games to injury
2016/17: Above-average
2017/18: Godawful
2018/19: Above-average
2019/20: Godawful

...and yet there’s no shortage of fans and media who have the assumption that Price will be elite baked into their analysis of the Habs.

I mean, it’s not impossible that it’ll happen. But it’s about as likely as Joe Thornton turning back the clock by five years and scoring at a first-line clip for us this season.
The thing with Price though is he'll have like a stretch of 5-7 games in a season where he'll be remarkable and then the usual "best goalie in the world" garbage gets its airtime around the league for two weeks. And that two weeks somehow colors his entire season. His PR team is second to none.

Literally just like every other decent goalie out there, except that their hot stretches aren't as newsworthy for some reason and are quickly forgotten.

it’s called pedigree — top 5 pick, a Hart Trophy and some Olympic Gold will give any player the benefit of many doubts

Carey Price has played the most minutes in the NHL last season.
This alone has a huge impact on his fantasy stats in an important number of fantasy leagues and platforms.

For example, here are his rankings in two Forum Ice Fantasy Leagues :

FI Fantasy Hockey League (Yahoo)

2018/19 : #1 Goaltender
2019/20 :
#2 Goaltender

FI Dynasty League (Fantrax)

2018/2019 : #4 Goaltender
2019/2020 : #1 Goaltender

Now as we are all aware Fantasy Hockey is not reality, and I am not suggesting that those stats be used as an indicator of Price's play.

However those stats can be used as a good indicator of Carey Price's enduring reputation.
They're is no shortage of fans and media who play fantasy hockey and see him finish at the top of those leagues regularly.

Anything about whether they can still play games vs just not having to quarantine? One thing to be in the team bubble (I see it as a household), another to put them on the ice and affect the other team.

and GMs

but it is much more possible that Price has a great year than Joe but both are unlikely

Habs add frolik.

You would think they'd go for some center depth. They don't really have a 4th C and none of their wingers can fill in at C either, except I guess maybe Drouin except he sucks at it.

I dont mind them leaving the 4th line spot for RP
in fact i hope that is what happens

it is the RD depth I am more concerned about

and Players.

Every year the NHLPA makes a poll with 500+ players answering questions.

Price was voted best goaltender by the players in 2018-19 and 2019-2020.

In 2017-2018 the question was « Which goaltender is the hardest to score on » ? and Price won with 41%
