I recall Hickey reporting pre-draft Gainey absolutely wanted a RDman in the system, Gauthier apparently saw Fisher in Minny and recommended him. Habs also drafted a RDman with their second of 2nd round picks from the Q that draft, would’ve been nice if they at least took Petry instead...

The Flyers wanted Bobby Sanguinetti, he was their guy. The Rangers picked him right before them at 21, and the Flyers were pissed. So they "settled" on the Gatineau guy, the guy Clarke that didn't care at all for & wasn't worth remembering his name for.

I'm sometimes hesitant to heap on praise to certain people when they lucked out more than anything else.

I was paraphrasing a bit but I recall reading about the Flyers scouting staff being certain that he would be snagged by Montreal. To make things worse, we even had him ahead of Fischer on our list but we went against our list on draft dray.

We had too many small forwards and not a lot of defensemen in our pipeline. Turned out it was one of the worse draft ever for defense.
