The Motherfucking 2021 Season Thread

I want to believe management see this as a rare opportunity to be one of the favourites to go deep this year without having the hurdles of Boston and Tampa to deal with until later

like CH1 said it’s a big risk going into the playoffs with the current tandem of guys with questionable health and one borderline NHL goalie

As far as my "position" goes, Dubas getting fired isn't really what I want. I agree with so much of his philosophy when it comes to team building, and think that overall he's done a great job building this organization. And I agree with Preston that if he goes, the replacement will probably be worse, and signal a change in direction that most of us aren't going to be happy with.

But it's hard for me to square that with the very real possibility we might keep Fred past the deadline, and he very well could be our starter for game #1 of the playoffs again. That would just be catastrophic mismanagement of the most important position on the team, and it'd piss me off enough that I probably would want to see Dubas & Keefe fired at that point, just on principle.

Even if he trades away Fred, and then Campbell or whoever else we bring in also fails to get it done, that would be far more palatable to me then running it back with Andersen one more time. At least he'd have finally recognized the problem and made an attempt to fix it.

I could probably also live with Dubas keeping Andersen past the deadline. So long as if Campbell and Andersen are both healthy, they go with Campbell as their starter in the playoffs. Though I'd still question the wisdom of sinking $5M of this year's limited cap space into a backup goalie who'd make for a shitty safety net for our "starter" anyway. And if we don't win, I'd question it even more.

So uh, no one actually wants to fire Dubas, everyone just wants him to do the very obvious thing of not making a sub .900 goalie our starter?

Seems fair.

How about replacing a .897 goalie with a .905 goalie?

.905 is better than .897, so sure, why not?

That's 8 goals per 1000 shots, or about 5 goals less than Freddy himself has given up so far this season so far. If memory serves, the worst goalie I've mentioned as a replacement this season was in the .910-912 area at the time (.918 now, you might know him. Short, speaks with a french accent, massive fan of south african civil rights leaders)

What if there isn't an adequate replacement that doesn't cost us too much in player capital or come saddled with term?

What exactly does an adequate replacement for .897% look like in your world? There are a bunch of pending UFA's who are providing much better than that. Any of them would do to tandem with Jack.

But if you want a complete list, here's the UFA goalies that would all be an upgrade on Freddy to one degree or another

Raanta, Bernier, Ullmark, Rittich, Driedger, Smith, Reimer

And even better, of course, if this theoretical .905 goalie has a lower cap hit than Andersen.

Huh. Somehow I missed that the Hurricanes have another goalie aside from Reimer & Mrazek who's stepped up and played really well this year. I'd definitely be down for picking up Reimer to platoon with Campbell the rest of the way. He's having yet another respectable year as a #1B goalie, his cap hit is $1.6M lower than Fred's, and his contract's expiring at the end of this season.

The catch would be whether or not the Hurricanes would be willing to part with Reimer when Nedeljkovic is still a kid, and Mrazek's been out with an injury until the end of January. Unless they want Fred?
