New Canadian Politics Thread

I got my ballot on Friday. It is completed and awaiting a drop off to Elections Canada (or a mailbox, but I don't trust Canada Post so think I will drop it direct). Joys of Hfx but Elections Canada's office is basically on my way to work.
 
There’s good and bad to the PPC becoming an actual thing, I guess.

There's some serious potential for comedy if Max Bernier loses his own riding, but one of the other lunatics he recruited wins in some redneck riding way out in the sticks. Then Max might get ousted from the leadership of his own vanity project, after sacrificing his own political career, decency and credibility to create it.

I've also long wanted to see the wingnut, far-right faction of the CPC's break off and form their own party again. Both to split the vote on the right, and to hopefully get the CPC to move back towards the center and maybe provide another credible alternative worthy of consideration.

At the same time, the larger the number of Canadians who actually support this shit, the sadder that'll be.

There are two types of PPC lawn signs in my neighbourhood. Some with the candidate's name on them as usual, many with a one line slogan like "Say no to vaccine mandates".

Uhhh...wouldn’t there already be multiple laws on the books that’d make it a criminal offense to obstruct an ambulance with its lights on, or block access to a hospital?

And that’d give police all the legal mandate they’d need to arrest these people while doing either of those things?

Then why were people in Vancouver allowed to do just that last week?

The way I see it is that these people will always be there. You're not going to change their minds. They've drank the kool-aid. They're in Jonestown now. So the best you can hope for is a handful of right wing nutter parties that distrust each other and just keep splitting the vote enough to deny the Cons a mandate.

I honestly have no idea.

For whatever reason, it seems like the only time the police aren’t gung-ho to crack skulls and throw people in handcuffs during disruptive protests is when the protesting is being done by the far-right/PPC/mostly-white crowd.

Makes you wonder about how many police are sympathetic to their cause...

this is a fundamental problem with policing. they should not be deciding what offences are/aren't unworthy of their attention. but they do, all the damn time.

and, as you note, they seem to sympathize most with the far right, white supremacists, the rapiest among us, etc.

Knee jerk statement. I believe this is again provincial or local matter In some areas it is already illegal to block abortion clinics.
It’s easy for campaigning party leaders to promise what people want to hear, but just don’t hold your breath waiting for them to introduce legislation.

Agreed with the bolded, but why don't you mind that it's a provincial matter when it comes to things the Liberals haven't done, like vaccine passports?

And criminal law in Canada is federal, so it's very much within the power of the federal government to criminalize certain activity. Provinces are responsible for enforcement.

wait, how is making it illegal to block access to, for example, hospitals, a knee jerk statement?

and, even if it is, do you have any objection? or do you think people... should be able to block access to hospitals?

and, as manny notes, criminal law is federal.

I mean, no doubt there's naked partisanship at play here. but one party thinks it should be illegal to block access to hospitals and the other one... thinks you should be allowed to?

sometimes you can both be politicking hard but also just unambiguously morally in the right. this seems to be one of these cases to me... open to hearing why it isn't so...
 
and obviously I am really upset by the fucking dickwads blocking people from getting into hospitals. I'm probably not the only one. so kudos to JT for tapping into that. again, recognizing the politicking going on. still don't know what grounds are objectionable about it.
