The Fucking Season Thread - Redemption Tour '22

because he doesn't embellish or dive at all, and just barrels through infractions without flinching.

in this league, it pays to dive.
But then if he starts diving he'll be on notice real quick and won't draw any penalties. THAT is where it pays to not play on Toronto.

I agree with Tulloch on players who have the puck more likely should draw more penalties but I do like that Micah provides some context.

Yeah, some additional context is this though....Matthews has the puck on his stick in high danger areas about 35% higher than average, and about 20-25% higher than average overall.

Even getting fewer calls than average per minute should end up being washed out by having the puck on your stick far more often.

Is it just me, or does Matthews not get slashed, tripped, mugged regularly? He certainly gets hooked/interfered with as much as any other player though, and given his ice-time should draw a few more penalties, but that's probably true league-wide.

The "draw penalties" stat is really the "draws retaliatory penalties".

The attempts to trip, mug and slash are probably there but like was mentioned earlier he is likely bulldozing his way through them so the refs let play continue. If he losses possession or falls down he may get more calls.

For the next time someone argues the Leafs have no depth

Also Drai is kinda shitty without McDavid and any PP time

That's the potential problem when you load up your top 2 lines.

Foegle-McLeod-Kassian is a bad 3rd line

McLeod is a rookie getting caved in, Kassian has spent most of his career getting caved in and poor Foegele is chained to them.

Shore-Ryan-Scevior is a bad 4th line

Shore has been a 13th forward at best for a few years now, Derek Ryan went from being an analytics stud at 34 to dead in edmonton at 35 apparently, and Scevior has spent the last few years getting caved in.

The blueline is a bunch of specialists strapped to each other. It's guys who can move the puck but are horrific in their own end (Barrie, Bouchard) guys who can allegedly defend (Ceci & Russell) but are inept at moving the puck, and Darnell Nurse. The corpse of Duncan Keith is having a nice bounce back so far too, but still.

The probably need to shuffle that shit, but the bottom guys are too grim to do much with. Also, Leon might be better off on the wing...which is fine because Nuge is a decent 2C if necessary

They should probably consider

JP-Jesus-Yama
Leon-Nuge-Kassian
Foegle-Ryan-Hyman

Then a deadline upgrade on Kassian would give them a really nice top 9 if Ryan isn't done and responds well to have two feet for hands having, hard working analytics darlings with noses for the net flanking him.

That's exactly it. Different sport, but same issue, last week in a post game presser, Julius Randle was flat out told by a ref on the floor during a game that he wasn't getting calls because he was too strong and just plowing through the contact. Meanwhile the same refs let James Harden make a fucking mockery of the game for years because his acting ability on contact was so strong. Didn't matter how much evidence of him gaming the system they had, they didn't change how they called him until the league office stepped in and changed the rules to make almost half of his bag into offensive fouls.

Either it's a lesson to never trade with Carolina, or a lesson in better roster making players look better, because Foegele for Bear looks like another doozy of a trade.

MSM pegged is as a great deal. The bloggers hated it the minute it went down but also predicted it was coming

Bear looks pretty meh though. But yeah, Foegele has been junk. It's hard to say whether he's a product of Carolina, or whether he's being dragged into an analytic singularity by a bad 22 yr old rookie centre and Zack Kassian. Foegele was 4th among Carolina forwards in xGF last year, in shutdown line usage. Is Jordan Staal that good, is Ryan Mcleod that bad, or something in between?

Fun fact: Jason Spezza will forfeit 21,000 dollars worth of salary for his 6 game suspension.

Pionk will forfeit 58,000 for his

"Jason Spezza did say that Pionk was in a position to be hit"

lol. Spezz is currently penning a sequel to the all time great book

Looking on the bright side:

  • Spezza’s old, so a little time off in-season without him being injured isn’t the worst thing.

  • He has $100M+ in career earnings and the Leafs currently pay him in Country Kitchen Buffet coupons, so this won’t hurt him financially.

  • Pionk deserved a knee to the face after that hit on Sandin. Good on ya Spezz!
