2021-22 Season Hurricanes Misc. Thread

Watching the Canes get ruined last night by Columbus, and watching Freddie get beaten on multiple breakaways (he did stop 1), I was wondering what our current goaltending's shootout numbers looked like. The Canes are the only team not to have a game go to a shootout this season, and, well, that might be a good thing.

I understand that shootout performance is not directly 100% indicative of a goalie's abilities on breakaways, but its the most available general stat I can get at.

Here are some goalie career shootout save%s to ponder (these are all full career numbers):

Frederick Andersen .657
Antti Raanta .563

Petr Mrazek .765
James Reimer .691
Scott Darling .688
Curtis McElhinney .588

Andrei Vasilevskiy .819
Marc-Andre Fleury .738
Tuukka Rask .723
Juuse Saros .717
Sergei Bobrovsky .687
Jonathan Quick .686
Connor Hellebuyck .681
Darcy Kuemper .623
Jack Campbell .611 (just in case Leaf fans are checking out this post :) )

Cam Ward .642

There is no way that Cam Ward was .642. It had to be well below .300, dude didn’t make any saves after stopping Crosby, Palffy and Lemieux in his first game.
I know, right?!?!

This is derived from NHL.com's statistics tool:

Canes recalled Joey Keane to the taxi squad. Not the move I would have expected if a dman was recalled, I would have expected Lajoie, since they need a lefty. But if it means less Smith, I’m all for it.

Something to keep our eyes on. Both Columbus and Vancouver placed players in Covid protocol the day after playing the Canes. Cole Sillinger played 13:39 on Thursday, Connor Garland played 14:00 last night.

The Stars are shopping John Klingberg. He has about $2.2 million remaining cap hit this year and will be a UFA after the season. CapFriendly says the Canes have used a projected $2.864 million of LTIR. Does that mean there is about $1.1 million more that could be used to get to Gardiner’s cap hit and Waddell would have to move another $1.1 million to fit him? Or does Waddell have to offset Klingberg‘s hit dollar for dollar?

Ethan Bear at a $2M cap hit would be a close dollar-for-dollar exchange as well as right-shot defenseman.

Pending UFA right-shot defenseman is now a pending RFA for them. Upgrade rental for us for a true top-4 right-shot defenseman.

No banked cap room while you are tapping LTIR. The Canes right now could only add $1.1 million worth of AAV player. Doesn't matter how far along the season we are and how much actual cap hit a player had. Even trading Bear for Klingberg doesn't get the Canes there from a cap perspective, additional cap hit would have to go.

Org would presumably be looking at this deal as a rental add-on for a contending team. His pending payday long-term contract would be for someone else to pay, same as Hamilton (of similar age). But Slavin - Klingberg would be a nice functional pairing that also provides an additional power play quarterback and a puck-moving right-shot defenseman.

Being able to shelter DeAngelo in a third pairing and power play situations would give us a very nice right-side defense (Klingberg / Pesce / DeAngelo).

We certainly have the assets to pull off such a deal. Heck of a showcase for Klingberg to hit the UFA market with whatever aura this team provides this playoff season. Pairing with Slavin makes anyone look pretty good. Look what it did for Hamilton who got his payday.

So offering Dallas a face-saving functional right-shot young defenseman under team control for a number of years as the centerpiece of the deal is a good start that might be hard for other teams to specifically match. Fill in value from there. But more from the prospect side than anyone currently on roster. Bear is the limit for that.

I’m not sure the Canes will be big game hunting for Klingberg but they certainly will be deadline shopping for another veteran defenseman to add to the mix and I can see them willing to part with a prospect and a pick to get the vet D they like. Brenden Smith is the not the veteran D you love to slide into a playoff lineup in your top six if they had an injury and feel good about…

I get the interest, but I honestly think it wouldn't be worth the bother. Klingberg just hasn't been all that good since he had hand surgery in 2018. I mean, he's a solid enough defender, but most of his offensive game dried up after that. Which makes him a fairly expensive rental for what you get. He's really no better than Slavin or Pesce on the power play at this point, and he'd be a pure rental because he's looking for insane money and full term ... which he'll probably get somewhere, the market for D being what it is. So, even before considering what Dallas wants in return, I'm seeing too many red flags for this one to add up.

Shayna Goldman and Saad Yousuf posted a piece in The Athletic two hours ago listing the Canes among three teams potentially pursuing Klingberg. They cited Sportsnet's Jeff Marek as a source.

Martin Necas has entered the Covid protocol. It’s not like we’ll need him against the Bruins and Rangers this week...

Per Walt Ruff, these are the lines at practice.

Teräväinen - Aho - Jarvis
Svechnikov - Trocheck - Niederreiter
Lorentz - Staal - Fast
Martinook - Kotkaniemi - Stepan

Slavin is out of the protocol, so the pairings at practice are almost back to normal

Slavin/TDA
Skjei/Pesce
Smith/Cole
Keane/Bear

No word on what’s up with Bear. He took the warmup on Saturday but then was scratched with an undisclosed issue.

Honestly, I think Bear has some lingering issues from those shots he took to the leg last week. His mobility has been iffy since then.

Marek is reliable and I don't doubt that Carolina has interest. I just think it would end up like that Vatanen deal where you end up giving up a lot to get a rental guy who does "OK"
