2021-22 Season Hurricanes Misc. Thread

Jordan Martinook has entered the Covid protocol. So it looks like either Noesen from the taxi squad or a recall from Chicago for tomorrow.

Given that it's Martinook, so you're looking to replace 4th line grinding ... I'd figure that Noesen will be sufficient for Friday and Saturday. They might want to do something different for Tuesday's game with Vegas should Martinook be out that long.

I guess Leivo was recalled? (Edit: he was recalled on Tuesday and Keane was sent back) He’s on the 4th line at practice, not Noesen, per Walt Ruff.

Teräväinen - Aho - Jarvis
Svechnikov - Trocheck - Niederreiter
Lorentz - Staal - Fast
Leivo - Kotkaniemi - Stepan

I mean ... fine. Same difference, really. I'd rather have Leivo given the Rangers propensity to goon it up with their depth lines. He plays with a bit more oomph than Noesen.

BTW, you guys who go out of your way to point out how much Maniscalco sucks ... thoughts on Adam Gold? For my money, he's a local media type who has actually sunk below Chip Alexander on the "has anything to say that matters" scale. And I wasn't sure that was possible. Something broke in that dude's head when they got rid of Kaiton, and he's never been the same since.

I knew Adam and the old 850 the buzz crew back when I worked there. I hated their morning/afternoon shows and could only really tolerate Morgan Patrick…..who usually did the evenings and I think was the original postgame radio host. Adam has always been a blowhard who acted like he knew more than he actually did. He used to do the morning show and Joe Ovies was one of the producers/cohosts. 🤮

I used to listen to Gold and Ovies on my drive home from work, but I’ve been remote since March 2020 and haven’t listened to more than 5 minutes of his noon show. And I don’t listen to games on the radio, so I don’t here his intermission thoughts. I never thought he was much of a hockey guy, IMO, the only things he was competent at were baseball and college basketball.

Adam Gold has been the worst since he first started. I used to like Solarte ok but since he left a constant stream of garbage/worthless programming, including the Canes pre and post game. The sad thing is people new to hockey might think he knows what he’s talking about. Happily though if they get a few games into watching hockey they realize he’s just a blowhard.

sorry that’s not nice. I’m considering deleting it. I know he thinks he’s trying.

Yeah, Solarte was good. Too bad he couldn’t get a TV job here.

LOL…are we talking about the Adam Gold who was just voted NC Sportscaster of the Year?!!!

Competition? That's one of those things that ping pongs around an increasingly smaller batch of people.

I've got time for Gold on some topics, but hockey is NOT one of them. Turns out that Kaiton and Forslund must have been feeding him a lot of info, because since they left I'm surprised he can find the arena parking lot. His "opinions" at trade deadline time are particularly laughable ... since he knows both jack and squat about guys in other programs and ridiculously over-values Hurricanes players.

Mike's a good dude and does know hockey, but he left the market for personal reasons. I'm just glad he stuck in Charlotte, because God knows those clowns needed some help too. I'll always remember how well Solarte handled the first Cup run in 2002 ... talking locals off the edge and generally educating the market about how playoff hockey really works.

The problem with all the supposed reporters is they pretty much seem to read the same stuff we all have access to and repeat it with their personal spin etc. that’s not reporting. For crying out loud do some legwork. I don’t need an article based on the post game interview presser or what someone posted on twitter. I can get that on my own.
And if you’re going to ask a question in the postgame don’t ask stupid cliche questions like “How good is Jakob Slavin?” At least not repeatedly.

And. AG has been here where the only top level pro team is the Hurricanes. It is and has been his effing job to learn and understand the game.

To be fair to all the sports generalists in the market, it's a weird mix of diverse stuff to cover. College basketball, college football, Hurricanes ... and then they also have to stick with the stuff that's popular in every sports market, primarily the NFL. That's a big ask to cover all that stuff well, and the people who stick to a specialty generally do a good job. I just don't want anybody to think that I'm dumping on the entire profession or anything. Gold knows ACC basketball backwards and forwards. He's just the kind of guy who's got enough of an ego to where being good at one aspect of his job makes him think he's good at everything ... and he's not. We're blessed with a few alternate outlet people and a couple of very talented stats guys. They don't always write all that well, but they add to the depth of understanding. So does Civian in her weirdly specific way. Because if all we had was our own two eyes and the traditional media people from our primary sports radio and newspaper crews ... woof. And all Canes fans know the national NHL press barely knows the team exists, even when they're legitimately good. DeCock is the only one of the local, traditional media lot who has even a vague idea what he's looking at when he watches a hockey game IMO ... and he's only checked in to the Canes every so often.

And look ... we could have Edmonton's NHL media. Or Toronto's. Or Montreal's. It could be worse. "Why are you so pissy, Leon?"

Former Canes Lucas Wallmark, Joakim Nordstrom and Marcus Kruger were named to Sweden‘s Olympic team. Wallmark and Nordstrom are playing for CSKA Moscow, Kruger is playing for Zurich in the Swiss League.
