The Canes look to make it 6 in a row in the Motor City.

After a hard fought win against Edmonton, the Canes look to keep their streak going. Speaking of streaks, Teravainen is on a heater, hitting the score sheet in every game since returning from injury. He has 11 points in the 8 games and goals in 3 straight. He and Aho teamed up for their 171st goal together, tying the franchise record held by Ron Francis and Kevin Dineen. Expect Andersen tonight but with 3 games in 4 days and 4 in 6 we’re going to see Raanta at some point this week.

The Red Wings had sort of climbed into the periphery of the playoff discussion, but they’re 13 points behind the Caps and have fallen below NHL .500 with 52 points in 53 games. They’re 5-5 in their last 10 and have lost 2 in a row, most recently scoring 7 against Toronto but losing by 3. Lucas Raymond had 2 goals, Filip Hronek had 3 assists. Dylan Larkin leads 6 skaters with more than 10 goals with 26 and is averaging more than a point per game. Rookie dman Moritz Seider leads with 34 assists, tops among rookies and 10th among all dmen. Fellow rookie Lucas Raymond leads all rookies with 42 points. Alex Nedeljkovic is showing that last year was an aberration with a 3.14/.903 stat line. He’s had 2 stinkers in a row, allowing 12 goals on the last 49 shots he’s faced. He gave up 6 of Toronto’s 10 goals in 31 minutes. The Wings are 20th in goals per game and 28th in goals against. They’re 26th on the PP, 25th on the kill.

The Wings are one of the few teams that still start at 7:30. Bally Sports South for TV.

Detroit heads out for the dreaded Florida swing after this. Remember when a West Coast trip was something for which to gird up the old loins? Yeah, now it's a trip through the Southeast. Speaking of meat grinders, most of what I've read about Ned's season is actually still fairly positive. The D in front of him is comprised largely of children and dinosaurs and Jeff Blashill seems to be tasked with getting the Wings on the scoresheet more than with getting them competitive. It's working. Detroit is actually watchable now and are scoring enough to take a step up when the next guy comes in and teaches them how to be boring ... I mean, to play defense. So yeah, it turns out that Ned isn't superhuman, but the only people who thought he was were his online cheering section/praise band. And since those people don't seem to learn from their mistakes, just keep that in mind the next time internet chatter starts to build for the next young guy who has a hot couple of months.

If I was picking goalie matchups, I'd let Rannta have the crease tonight. The Canes head to Washington next and follow that up with Pittsburgh. I'd like to see Freddie get a game off before those two.

As expected, Ned isn't getting a lot if help from the team in front of him BUT he has looked pretty bad on a whole lot of Goals I've seen in the past month. 3rd string goalie level bad.

Noted ... he HAS been looking worn down of late. That's the risk you run with a relatively young guy in that situation, and that's one reason I was surprised that Detroit didn't just straight up platoon him with Greiss. After all, he's never been a workhorse at any level really, yet there they are running him out for 4-6 game stretches this season.

Ned has started 34, Greiss has started 20. That’s only a 53 game pace for him, which is probably low for a guy that is supposed to be the starter. Greiss missed more than a month from January 9 to February 12 and but started 3 games of the 5 games they played since his return. Calvin Pickard pitched in a start at the end of January.

Yeah ... when I say platoon, I mean split fairly evenly. You know, the way Ned shared the crease with Reimer last season, when they split 45 starts almost exactly down the middle. They might be paying him like a starter, but that doesn't mean there was a shred of evidence that he was ready to be one ... and now they've worn the guy's brakes down with a third of the season left to play.
