The Fucking Season Thread - Redemption Tour '22

Presty, I like how you keep laughing, but honestly, if you're not seeing how ineffective he is while watching the games, I don't know what to tell you. Unless he has all the time in the world to make a play, he fucks up. They catch up to him even when he has plenty of time and obstruct the play or take the puck away. John Carlson blew past him even though he started out 20 feet in front of him and there was no one in between. This is not a good player anymore.
your eyes are lying sons of bitches

Like seriously we just smashed a good team and all leafs fans can talk about is dumping one of their best dmen because he got walked for a goal in a blowout.

You know this discussion started with news item about him missing games, right?

We weren't jusy sitting around raging about Muzzin. We didn't land on Plymouth Rock, Plymouth Rock landed on us.

LOF also has a weird Muzzin thing too, to be fair.
In fairness, this is the first year he may have a case that he has declined so he's getting horned up, but as usual he's taking it way too far. Potential decline does not always equal unplayable scrub suprisingly enough!

Yeah, even im just saying that maybe he shouldn't take all of the heavies anymore and that the duty should be split more evenly on a blueline that has 5 other defenders that you can trust in taking some amount of shifts against top competition.

Everything about moving him is just cap/asset management. Getting the best return for him while we can, while at the same time moving on from our 2nd highest paid defender who is showing signs of not being the same guy we signed to the contract.

None of our defenseman are as bad as some of the crap that's been through our lineups over the years, not even Boosh even if he annoys me, IMO. Come a long way.

Think you move on from Muzzin next year though, our LD is damn good.

Muzz's season is sorta reminding me of Niskanen's the year before he joined Philly and crushed it. Sometimes olds have nightmare one-off seasons. For Jake it was only really 35 or 40 games of a rough patch. If he was younger we'd look at his 2 or 3 year splits and take a deep breath, but he's getting up there in age and becoming slightly broken. So I do get the concern that he may not be that top pair monster anymore. Good news is Leafs aren't depending on him to be that this year.

I didn’t even see last night’s game and also haven’t seen any of the highlights, so my comment on Muzzin had nothing to do with anything that happened last night.

I also don’t share LOF’s hate for Muzz. For the most part, I think he’s been a stud for us since he arrived from LA. My concerns are based on:

  • His age

  • Getting knocked out of the last two playoff series the Leafs have participated in.

  • Multiple concussions this year and now apparently dealing with another injury on top of that with the playoffs right around the corner.

  • The dip in his play this year.

  • The seemingly worse performance from any defender that’s been paired with him this season.

I do hope he can turn it around, because having any reasonable approximation of Muzz at his best would be huge for us, especially combined with the addition of Gio & the emergence of Lilly.

But if we get to the end of a third straight playoff run that Muzz hasn’t been able to help us with, I don’t see how you don’t question whether his $5.6M cap hit in each of the next two seasons can’t be put to better use.

We’re just fortunate to have Sandin and Lilly. Otherwise our D gets concerning at some point with Muzz and Brodies age. That’s the tough part about building through trades and FAs.

but having two high end young, cheap dmen means we don’t really have to worry about it.

I've been up and down about him since he got here. Thought he was bad initially, then warmed up to him. Mildly annoyed each time he bowed out of the playoffs with an injury when we needed him most, so was questioning his durability more than his skill until this year.

But what he's been this year is garbage. You can throw any xgf nonsense at me as you like, but he's constantly fucking up. Maybe the other four guys on the ice are doing great and their play overcomes the impact of his play in the fancy stats. Either way, he has completely slowed down, not just his actual speed, but his reaction time and his judgment of how much time he has. Constantly getting caught when he has time to clear or skate it out. Constantly. It's not something that's really debatable at this point, but debate it if you must. Just like how a few months ago nobody agreed with me, and now half of the folks seem to, the rest of you will come around soon enough.

But to be clear, I hope he's good enough to play and be his very best in the playoffs. I just question if he can since I haven't seen it all year.
