Colorado with a gift call powerplay goal. B.S. call for Cup Finals.

For the record, I'm not for either damn one of them. My Dad is an Avs fan & I've heard just about enough about them this year. Can't get behind Tampa either. F- 'em...both.

Jim
In real time I saw them both as trips, just my pov.

And OT the Avs Got Vasi to move E-W and score so 4-3 for 1 Avs - 0 Tampa
The problem seemed to be more that he DIDN'T move East to West. Dude either got his skate stuck in a rut or just slipped out of his push-off on that goal. Vasilevskiy definitely didn't have his fastball last night.

And the Avs still only escaped with an OT win at home.
Yeah, we'll see how it goes when he finds his game a bit. Hard to take much away from first games, really. I thought both teams had some ideas that worked and can be expanded upon, and both teams had some stuff that didn't work and will be tweaked. Tampa clearly has more experience in adjusting and improving through a series, but that Avs team is just such a freaking handful. Should be interesting.

Vegas finally traded Evgenii Dadonov. He was sent to Montreal in exchange for Shea Weber. Weber sent all season on LTIR, there is no reason to believe the last 4 years of his contract will be any different. He has a $7.857 million cap hit after singing with the Preds for 14 years/$110 million when they met the Flyers offer sheet. A buyout wouldn’t give them any relief, his salary after next season is only $1 million so the buyout would be $5.357 million the first year and then $7.357 million for the next 3.

The Nashville Predators are about to be sold to former Tennessee governor Bill Haslam, according to Sportico. His brother Jimmy owns the Cleveland Browns and Columbus Crew.

That's really good business for Montreal. You really only want to get stuck using that LTIR relief for that long a term unless you have to because there's no flexibility on how it's applied. And with both Weber and Price on LTIR ... ugh. Dadonov ain't great or anything, but he can play a shift. Unlike Weber. Vegas continues to have a very weird view of the world. You do you, Knights.

Vegas successfully dumps Dadonov's salary like they tried and failed to do at the trade deadline. Montreal get's a guy that they can play and then trade for something near the deadline.

The cost to Vegas is that Weber contract and use of LTIR isn't totally free. Not that I think that Vegas is going to successfully be able to bank any cap room given the contracts they already have, but carrying that Weber contract around for 4 years and LTIRing it every season impacts your flexibility to make moves by banking cap space and then deploying that banked space around the deadline. It doesn't make it impossible to do stuff, but it complicates and limits you around the deadline whereas a team not using LTIR to 'go over the cap' can bank cap room all season and then deploy that banked cap room to get pricier deadline assets.

At some point Vegas might trade the Weber contract to another tanking team that is concerned about the cap floor, we will see.

Memo to Montreal, make sure you have Dadonov's up to date 'no trade' list!

Yeah, Weber's contract cash is WELL below the cap hit at this point. He's only due actual contract payments of $3 million next season and then $1 million for the duration of the contract. It would be pretty cheap cap floor insurance and should be move-able to Arizona or Ottawa or somebody looking to avoid the floor while tanking ... Pittsburgh or Chicago, maybe Boston ... or a team that's in even worse cap hell like Minnesota. Flexibility be damned, the Wild are gonna be hurting for the next 3 seasons until they purge those Suter and Parise buyout penalties.

Colorado ran over the Bolts... 7-0 in the third..
You hate to draw conclusions from 2 home games, especially when Tampa came back from 0-2 on the road in the last series, but you get the feeling that the next time the Avs fly into Denver, they’re bringing Stanley with them.

Tampa looked REALLY slow last night. Not sure if they're worn all the way out or not, but having a speed deficit is one thing. Looking like 18 pylons is another. They'll either figure out a way to slow the games down, or this series will be short and boring.

That’s an odd pairing but ok
I don't think it's all that odd. Nill is still convinced that the Stars are in their window, even if most people think that's nuts. He's swinging big with an expensive, veteran, grind out the points coach. They interviewed Trotz and Torts too ... and it always seemed like a coach with some rings on the tree was an objective. Honestly, if Oettinger really has come into his own, then it's probably a playoff team at a minimum, despite all the money they have tied up in aging stiffs. If they get Robertson signed and figure out a replacement for Klingberg in the back, then they've got one more year with Hintz on a reasonable deal to make a run. At that point, who knows ... but I guess they figure they'll take a swing at it this coming season and see.

Nobody watching? 8 minutes left in the 2nd, it’s 5-2 Bolts And they just chased Kuemper. Bolts might have lost Nick Paul though. He took a push in the back and fell awkwardly, it looked like a right knee injury. But he’s still out there, limping around the ice, and scored a goal after the injury.

Hmmm. So the broadcasters couldn’t stop with how Tampa has never seen such a good team and how Tampa “isn’t a bad team” and how “Colorado is just better than them” and “Tampa is panicking” and now this. Maybe that’s all true. Who knows. It’s not a series until someone loses at home.
