Tech Thread

Though, we would have had board meetings i think. They would have been zoom meetings held from various tropical locations, but they would have happened

FTX is what would have happened if FI started a crypto exchange and none of us gave a fuck. Arguments of real profits vs expected profits using gifs and shit
nah man I am way too diligent a record keeper to not have daily fucking aneurysms about any one of the examples she cited

"There have been reports in the press about falling stock prices and rapidly disappearing balances here at FI-X. What they don't understand is that our xSTONK% is highest on the exchange. SHOW THEM THE SPREADSHEETS!!!!!"

Lengthy thread about Elon's past. Sounds like Elon lied about his education, among other things. Does it even matter? Take with a grain of salt.

How does a guy like this get so far? It's unfathomable.

Elon has been trying to white wash it for a number of years now, but here's a direct quote of his from a Forbes article that Forbes mysteriously no longer hosts.

JC: How do you handle fear?
EM: Company death – not succeeding with the company – causes me a lot more stress than physical danger. But I've been in physical danger before. The funny thing is I've not actually been that nervous. In South Africa, my father had a private plane we'd fly in incredibly dangerous weather and barely make it back. This is going to sound slightly crazy, but my father also had a share in an Emerald mine in Zambia. I was 15 and really wanted to go with him but didn't realize how dangerous it was. I couldn't find my passport so I ended up grabbing my brother's – which turned out to be six months overdue! So we had this planeload of contraband and an overdue passport from another person. There were AK-47s all over the place and I'm thinking, "Man, this could really go bad."

They've tried to recast his father as a moderately successful South African engineer but there's just so many of these stories about private planes and weekend runs to Hong Kong and shit. Nobody ever denies that Errol owned at least part of an emerald mine, but they work really hard to make it appear like the emerald mine didn't make money despite the fact that by all appearances, Elon lived in a neighbourhood that they now try to describe as "upper middle class" but a quick pass through google maps shows to be quite upscale and bordering to the country club. I live in what a lot of people would call an upper middle class neighbhourhood (2500-4000sq ft subdivision houses, environmental protection zones, nice schools, etc, etc)...and this aint' that. That is a gated community with moderate to nice estate homes.

So how does a guy like that get so far? Come from a rich family, get pushed in the right direction for his skillset (he was a coder) at the right time (birth of the internet age), meet the right people and have the money to be able to take advantage of it (didn't need to be employed to eat like most of us) and just ride his connections upward.

The story of Elon isn't the usual "idiot with an inheritance" failing upwards story. He actually did have to make a fair bit of that happen. It took a fair bit of good timing and hard work (as well as starting the game on 3rd base) to end in the position to build x.com and subsequently get put on Thiel's radar. But as I've mentioned a bunch of times over the last few years, despite trying to brand himself as a tech genius, he's a self promoter and a bullshit futurist first and foremost. He speaks just enough "tech" to excite the monied class and it's made him wildly, wildly wealthy.
