GDT #8 - 2023/10/28 - TOR @ NSH 7pm - LoF Revenge Game

There's been a few OTs tonight.

Opening faceoffs:

BOS 3C Boyle vs FLA 1C Barkov
TBL 4C Glendening vs SEA 4C Bellemare
DET 1C Larkin vs NYI 3C Pageau
NYR 1C Zibanejad vs WPG 1C Scheifele

- 4 1Cs
- 0 2Cs
- 2 3Cs
- 2 4Cs

14sec and 16sec shifts would be lost draws.

So 3-2-3 when he loses the draw.

3-1-1 when he wins the draw.

First one is a lost draw, but a penalty at the faceoff in 3 seconds which then results in PP1 coming on. So it's like he won it or didn't take it at all.

Second one is a won draw and 16 seconds to score.

Conclusion remains: when he gets the hell off quickly, we almost always win or go to SO, and when he loses the draw and stays on for 20 seconds or more bad things happen.

That's exactly what the counter argument is.

Well, I’m on #TeamLOF on this one.

For one, I’m not wild about even playing Kampf at 5-on-5, let alone 3-on-3.

And I think the best approach is to not galaxy-brain this shit and just put your best players out there.

Well no matter what one thinks this doesn't appear to be a uniquely Leafs thing. Seems we've been trending in the direction of utilizing garbage players on the opening faceoffs across the league especially from analytically inclined organizations. You can disagree with it, but I challenge the idea that it's some absurd idea without logic or potentially even data behind it.

My gut says it's ridiculous too and they shouldn't galaxy brain it. But zeke presented a pretty good case and it seems many other forward thinking teams agree.

Seriously though.. Boston, Tampa, Seattle, Toronto... All teams that generally let data drive their decisions and try to think outside the box. I don't expect LOF to ever agree because the debate is reminding me of the Jays starting pitcher debates but as long as he knows that there is logic behind it and it isn't based on some maniacal old school coaching hunch, I'll consider it a win.

Playing Kampf 5v5 is much worse than playing him at 3v3 when he comes off the ice as soon as we have the puck.

I think we need a Zadina level psychological dive into the minds of these head coaches playing their 4LC to start OT as well as the Kampf and Kampf lites on other rosters to find out their true intentions and feelings before we can say for certain if this is a good strategy.

Did you see my last posts?

How do you justify the strategy when Kampf getting stuck out there for 20 seconds or more means we almost never win the OT? Unless he’s a wizard at faceoffs and will always win and get off, but he’s not and he doesn’t, and then we don’t win.

and is a disaster without the puck 3v3.

lol, LoF right now.

P.s. leafs are crushing 3v3 play this year at 78xgf% - best in the league of any team that has played more than 2min of 3v3.

the best faceoff guy wins one more draw every ten OTs, and is a disaster without the puck 3v3.
Okay, I see you’re back to prior arguments since fleshing out Kampf’s actual impact like we just finished doing didn’t work out for you.

So don’t use Tavares. Start with Matthews.

If only we had another Kampf who we could start out on D in case we lose the draw, but if we win it then he goes off quickly for Rielly. Imagine how good our numbers would be then.
