OT: The Official Toronto Raptors Thread

View: https://x.com/LegionHoops/status/1778135635955687795

NBA commissioner Adam Silver said Wednesday afternoon that Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter, who is currently under investigation by the league following multiple instances of betting irregularities over the past several months, could be banned from the league permanently if what he's accused of winds up being true, calling it a "cardinal sin."

"I have an enormous range of discipline available to me," Silver said at a hotel in midtown Manhattan on Wednesday, after the league's annual Board of Governors meetings at the end of the regular season were conducted over the prior 24 hours. "But it's a cardinal sin, what he's accused of in the NBA, and the ultimate, extreme option I have is to ban him from the game.

"That's the level of authority I have here. Because there's nothing more serious, I think, around this league when it comes to gambling: betting on our games. And that is a direct player involvement. And so, the investigation is ongoing, but the consequences could be very severe."

Suspicions arose from prop bets involving Porter for games on Jan. 26 and March 20, in a story first reported by ESPN on March 25. Porter prop bets from those two dates wound up being the biggest moneymakers for each of them, according to DraftKings Sportsbook.

Doesn't seem like there's any additional news, just Silver saying that he can fire Porter out of a cannon into the sun if the crime warrants it.

Also....Jrue is real gud. But he's almost 34, has a player option for next year, and then a 4/135 extension on top? I'm not sure who they were bidding against for 34 year old Jrue if he declined the 39.4 million dollar PO.

Boston's cap structure is going to detonate when Tatum gets his supermax while the Brown & Jrue deals are ~90 million. Shit, it's going to be 150 million for a Big 3 that isn't chip calibre imo. No chance they're able to afford their 2nd and 3rd best players (KP & White)

Taking a bit of a deeper look into this....Boston needs to win this year or next. I think their window closes shut after that due to horrific contracts

Tatum: 35-37(PO)-SuperMax
Brown: 52-56-61-65-69
Jrue: 39-34-34-34-34 (not sure how it's staggered, probably from 30 up to 38 over the 4 years)
White: 19-XXXX
KP: 29-31
Al: 9.5-XXXX

The problem is in who they signed and for how much...here's the EPM from this season:

EPM (League Rank)

Tatum: 4.8 (13)
White: 4.4 (21)
Porzingis: 4.1 (29)
Brown: 3.1 (35)
Jrue: 1.8 (67)

That's a whole big ass bag to lock up in your 4th & 5th best players, especially when your best player is more of a second tier star than a superstar. The real MVP level guys are up in the 8-10+ EPM level. Boston really might have been best calling Jrue's bluff here, let him excercise his player option and then make him choose between a contender for a 3 year free agent deal or the FVV special with Detroit.
