Guentzel's Rights Traded to Tampa Bay

WTF!!! It's on the Canes website so it's not just speculation. For a 3rd round pick - when? - not even a warm body. Even if Jake stated to Tulsky that was his intention a decent player should have come back.

That's an amazing return the afternoon before ufa

I saw this coming, they weren't going to meet his demands. Tampa is using stamkos money so sign stamkos.

You don’t get decent roster players for pending UFA’s…

It’s a 2025 pick. And yeah, getting that so Tampa could give him the 8th year is a tidy bit of business.

When he signs for more than $8 million, the little fairy tale about it not being signed was because Tulsky waited a few weeks to meet the price and term should disappear. He was never signing for $8 million. If Tulsky met it within minutes of the proffer, they’d have found another point to raise.

Edit: never mind on the 8th year. Players can only sign for 8 years if they were on the team on the most recent trade deadline. So he can only go for 7 with Tampa.

I would've been happy with 8x8 for Jake, but getting a 3rd rounder just for negotiation rights isn't too shabby.

Not that we need a reminder, but priority #1, 2, 3 and 4 for most UFAs is money. It's OK for the Canes to continue to play the valuation game with player contracts as long as the understanding is that we will rarely, if ever, be able to retain our higher end UFAs. In a rapidly rising cap world especially.

I won't worry about Guentzel and Necas being gone assuming that Canes have a great plan for replacing the 60+ goals they would have scored next season.

The one weapon the Canes will continue to try and use is cap space, if $8 million was allocated to Jake and Dundon leaves that $8 million on the table to use then there always enough teams looking to get out from under a contract at times, some owners just want to shed big contracts to save money but at least we have an owner willing to use that same space and dollar amount to try other things…hard to fall in love with players long term but certainly never boring here when it comes to change and trying new ways to skin a cat. Like Brian Burke use to say to anyone that would listen every year…”there are more mistakes made by NHL GM’s on UFA signing day than any other day of the year”!

Well, I doubt the plan is to fill with in house kids, so we'll just have to see how it plays out. Tampa gave up re-signing Stamkos, Sergachev and a 3rd rounder for one day of negotiations with Guentzel and whatever is left of McDonagh. It's not Carolina that's under the gun here. They've got the whole off season to cook.
