2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

Which isn't too bad, really. That's the system that MLB opts for, so teams need to play that game. Good for the players while it lasts before a hard cap comes into play.

A friend of mine is heading down tonight for it. Dinner tomorrow night with one of the players Then he suspects some very good seats for Saturday and Sunday.
rough life.

My brother in law got passes in this year's lottery after 20+ years of entering. I texted him yesterday and told him i hoped he had a boring time and he responded an hour later with a video of Freddie Couples holing out that putt from off the green.

I have a buddy who can't walk near dirt without finding an arrowhead, tip, tool, etc. I've gone with him when the lakes get really low in late summer. I found a few chips and pieces, etc but nothing worthwhile. I found one decent sized piece he said was a skinner or tool of some sort. But my ex thought it was just a rock and threw it into the yard. I've never found an actual arrowhead, etc. But my buddy can't find sharks teeth at the beach. And I can't walk on the beach without filling my pockets with them. But I grew up pulling sharks teeth near Carolina Beach. Wed pull them out of the road, in the summer when it was hot. The gravel in the asphalt had tons of sharks teeth in it. We'd find them in gravel driveways, etc and at the beach. I guess he grew up in Franklin County walking tobacco fields after they plowed, so it's what we got used to.

When sports betting was on the cusp of being legalized in North Carolina, we spent some time here discussing the taxes NC would collect from the SportBook companies on their profits. This tax percentage was set at 18%, which is somewhat in the middle of state tax rates for online sport betting.

The budget proposal that the NC Senate released yesterday would DOUBLE that tax rate....to 36%. That would put NC closer to the highest tax rates in the country for online sports betting profits.

The Sportsbook companies are already blitzing bettors' emails about this, spouting nonsense about how this will hurt future innovative offerings and how unfair the tax hike is. The reality of course if this just reduces the Sportsbook's profits. They will still be making PLENTY of profit. They already deal with rates higher than 36% in 3 other states (NY, NH, RI). 36% would be tied with PA as the 4th higher state tax rate for online sports betting.

Well, I thought 18% was too low at the time it was set, so ... fine with me. Also, it's not like it's coming out of my pocket. Bettors are gonna bet, and the taxes revenues have been lower than expectations ... probably because the legislature believed what they were sold by the gambling sites about revenue capture.
