2024-25 NHL Misc. Thread

Sullivan will definitely follow the money to Broadway, no way he ends up anywhere else. Tocchet to Philly seems like a nice fit. Canucks might want to chase that college coach that spurned the Black Hawks. And the rumors won’t go away of that old fossil Quenneville heading to Anaheim.

Sullivan IS a Boston guy, so I'm sure he'll at least talk to the Bruins. But yeah, I think he ends up in New York ... the City, not the Island.

Anaheim's bonkers owner announced that he's dropping $1 billion on renovating and redeveloping the Honda Center. He'll want a name brand coach, so yeah ... I'd guess Q is the only one flawed enough to return his phone calls.

Sullivan’s first head coaching job was with the Bruins in 2003-04 and 2005-06. They won the Northeast the first year but lost to the Habs in the first round and then missed the playoffs. He’s only 57 but does he want to go back to the future, to a team that is probably a few years from contending?

Yeah, depends on what he's looking to do, really. I don't think the Rangers are really a Cup team without a roster churn and they've got their cap situation all wrong for short term roster upgrade. They don't have any real cap space until 2027 and next to nothing for this summer. And one thing we know about that Rangers job ... you've got 2 years to win. I just don't think that job is set up as the plum they think it is.

Boston has also burned this summer's money, but their cap space starts to open up significantly in 2026. They should have enough to not be terrible next season if they can find a system that works.

So ... Washington can clean up the series with Montreal at home tonight. The Canadiens have been a scrappy foe, but hoping for more than 5 out of that seems like a stretch. That's at 7pm, but Florida/Tampa kicks off at 7:30 and has the potential to get really nuts after the nonsense in Game 4. Florida has a chance to finish the Bolts, but it's in Tampa and they're (deservedly) short handed. Appointment viewing, either way

As unlikely as it would be, for some reason I’m intrigued with the idea of Sullivan in Seattle. I don’t see it happening, but I’d love to see Francis have a true NHL coach versus the guys he’s chosen in his career, who’ve all seemed like spare parts.

Apparently our old friend Jim Rutherford was quoted on Sportsnet in Canada that Mike Sullivan has no interest in coaching on the West Coast and has already told teams he will only consider East Coast coaching jobs. JR and the Canucks were interested in him once they found out Tocchet was leaving.

Let’s go Habs. More games = More rest

Utah Mammoth? Supposedly someone changed UtAh Hockey Clubs YouTube channel name and then quickly changed it back. But not before people saw it. Now they are staying quiet. It was one of the finalists so not a surprise. I personally think it’s an awful name. I’d believe at Utah hockey club if mammoth was the next choice

This article is ‘interesting’ not sure I’ve seen a team so publicly defeated mentally by their rival. I mean it’s accurate, but you don’t usually hear a coach…and especially a player admit they’re done and Florida has surpassed them…in public 15 minutes after a loss. Just found their defeatist attitude funny 🤷🏻‍♂️

Mammoth is pretty much the only name to which they could actually secure the rights out of a long list they considered. I also read somewhere that the league office told them that sticking with Utah HC wasn't an option their marketing people supported.

It's time for Brisebois and their ownership to admit that they can't keep whittling down the roster and maintain the same chance to win in the post season. Yeah, that core is plenty good enough to get all sorts of Ws in the regular season, but there's just no depth anymore and there hasn't been for a while now. I thought they made a mistake with the big commitment to Guentzel because it meant they had to shed any chance at building a third line. But hey ... Tampa being good isn't my concern. I'm sick of them and their arrogant fans at this stage anyway.

So ... status thoughts on the eliminated Eastern teams:

Montreal ...
They're in really good shape, presuming that Montembeault and Dobes remain on their current trajectories in net. Obviously that ain't a given, but still. The Canadiens have a good young group, some veteran grit and their one terrible contract (Laine) is offset by the last remaining year of Carey Price's LTIR. There's more talent to come from their development pipeline, and they have a bunch of picks in this year's draft. They don't have a ton of cap space this summer, or else I'd say they're poised to make some deals with prospects and picks. Instead, they can nibble around the edges of the roster, concentrate on improving that defense group, improve organically and take a bigger swing in the summer 2026

Tampa ...
Cap Hell is still Cap Hell if it's planned. They've got $8 million in space and are mortally locked in to their top 7 forwards, their top 4 D and their goaltender for what seems like eternity. There's almost no way to actually get better from this position and they won't have a first round pick in the draft until 2028. The upside is that they don't have a ton of bad contracts, as most of that money is being spent on guys who produce in their assigned roles. The issue is that they'll once again have to figure out how to flesh out half a roster on peanuts without any cheap ELC contracts to help

New Jersey ...
There's a lot to like with their roster when it's fully healthy but that has proven to be a repeating concern. The Devils' bet on Markstrom paid off, but a lot of their prospects either haven't found their offense or double up more proven veterans. And with only moderate Cap space ($12 mil) this summer, they may need to package some fairly promising kids to improve their rickety depth. There's no first rounder in this draft, but they have 2 seconds. This might be a year where they look to make their pipeline pay off in trade for bottom 6 forwards who can actually play. And if I was them, I'd be hatching a way to get either Palat or Meier off the books. Those are decent players being paid star wages. You can get by with one of those, but two of them turns into a handicap pretty quickly. Of course, they both have no movement clauses, as does Hamilton ... who is another guy you'd ideally think about moving since they have a raft of younger, cheaper puck movers. Nah, I figure they package up prospects for help up front and maybe free poor Nemec from an organization that really never seemed to understand or appreciate his tool kit.

Dobes looked fantastic last night, he put on quite a show. The Habs need to build some scoring depth behind their top line but Demidov is obviously a great start to that process.

If they're smart, and under current management they've been very smart indeed, then nobody in the East is better positioned than Montreal to be VERY good in 2-3 years.

Brady Tkachuk goes out of his way to make a hit, takes himself out of the play and picks up an interference penalty. Leafs score on the PP. Besides having an incredibly punchable face, more so than his brother, he’s a moron.
