Around the League 2019-2025 Edition

the way CJ reported it is the Leafs went to him and said we want to keep you, are you going to sign because if not we can trade you for Rantanen now. and he said he wanted to stay.

I don’t doubt that the reporting is true.

But I also don’t doubt that Marner might have just been bullshitting. I really get the feeling that he’s already made the decision to move on, unless the Leafs open the vault and give him an astronomical overpayment with a higher AAV than Auston’s.

As for why he’d lie, maybe he just didn’t want to go to Carolina, maybe he didn’t want to move with his wife about to give birth, maybe it was a pride thing of not wanting to risk seeing a guy he gets traded for come in and be an improvement. Or maybe he just wanted to screw over the team one last time.

Reality is that the most money for Mitch is in Toronto. The Leafs hold more cards than most think.
Also, dude makes really great (In regards to NHL) endorsements from mostly Toronto companies.

I’d say he probably stays. He’s from here, has played here his entire career and a long time with several members of the team. We should also be competitive for a few more years and he could break a bunch of franchise records plus there’s the chance to be part of the team that ends our Cup drought. He’s also stated publicly several times he wants to be here.

I'd have no qualms seeing Johnny walk, but a big hell no to replacing him with Florida's third best centre

Honestly....if I could trade Tavares for Bennett right now for the rest of the series I would. With the cap set to skyrocket, I would seriously consider Bennett. Especially considering the fact that the "market" for keeping Tavares is probably 7+ million per on a multi year. If we could get Bennett for the market rate of a middle 6 50 pt centre, fuck me I'd have to consider it.

If Tavares is willing to play anywhere then i can see 2/16-2/17 very much be in range for teams both contenders and young teams who want a leaderbean and think he's one of those

Based on my numbers, Marner's points were worth $11,462,967 for this season ($88mil salary cap), which is worth $12,095,946 in a $92.5 cap.
And Marner's camp will visit every interested team in order to bring a number back to the Leafs, it'll be up to the Leafs to decide.

Tavares numbers are right there too, in the $11mil range.

EV Production Pace:

24/25 (Playoffs)
Tavares: 28/59 (16/25)
Bennett: 19/43 (46/73)

23/24
Tavares: 21/46 (0/12)
Bennett: 18/35 (26/43)

22/23
Tavares: 18/42 (22/52)
Bennett: 16/40 (16/45)

Other than this past season, where Tavares was legitimately very good in the regular season, Tavares has the edge, but there isn't a huge gap between them in EV production. Bennett has been a better playoff producer though and has all of that intangible shit that sucks to play against in the playoffs. He's probably responsible for half of the pounding Tanev has taken, put our #1 out for the series and scored the backbreaker on us last night as well as the primary on the tying goal in game 3.
