I dont disagree.Quality of life mate, quality of life. Most guys are looking for big markets, nice destinations, etc. I think the west coast would appeal to Mitch, Columbus not so much.
You're not getting McDavid.Either tank or hit it big. With McDavid out there, I won't advocate for the thank. Set everything up next year so you are one McDavid away from winning it all and hope you land him.
If McDavid resigns, then tank away.
You're not getting McDavid.
Youre not winning with them so who gives a shit if you get rid of them? If you bring them back you're basically telling your fans to skip next season, and that IS insane. As much as it feels like insanity, I don't see how they can let him walk if he wants to stay. They would just need to negotiate the shit out of his deal to get him to sign for a relative song. Let him go for nothing and then what, sign Ehlers and Bennett? How do we even know any other good player wants to step into this?
I also think that letting Marner go will destroy Matthews, and he'll be gone soon after too after putting up bad numbers without Marner and getting all the blame. If they let Marner go, they probably should look into trading Matthews too, and just start over. But we'd get half price for Matthews right now, after all this. Unmitigated disaster, where the only path might be to bring them all fucking back, and we're not going to and will completely fuck the franchise for a decade as we run everybody else out of town.
Tank
It makes perfect sense. All management needs to do is accept the objective reality that this core will never win jack shit together. How many more years of this will it take for MLSE to wake up and smell the failure?I mean as frustrated as we all are right now, how the fuck could you justify taking a team that makes the playoffs every year and just won the division and advocating tanking instead?! It doesn't make any fucking sense.
Youre never getting McDavid.I don't think there's anyone this offseason. If you're letting Marner walk, then I think you sign Tavares for like $3M or something since he for sure wants to stay, and then just burn a year waiting for McDavid. There's nothing else to be done.
I miss Tatti and Hebsy.Social media today makes it a billion times worse than a few Sportsline comments from Hebscher and Tatti, and a couple of scathing Cox articles in the Star. Toronto may be a place where nobody can ever win.
No 1st round picks anytime soon…
Actually a bit worried about not having our pick next year. This team could easily not be in the playoffs if 1) Matthews is out long term with whatever injury 2) This is the Matthews we get going forward
The other four teams in our division are not likely to get anywhere as weaker as the leafs will be entering next season
Dimitri Orlov will be available. Is there a puck moving D out there this offseason they can get to replace Rielly after they ship him off to Vancouver or some such?
Just gotta fire the idiots in the front office first. They can't be making the retooling decisions. It's really, really not hard to take the bones of this, clear the decks of a few of those big contracts and come back better next year. I get that a message of hope is not what anyone really wants to hear right now, which is good, because I don't have one. But as mentioned earlier, just clearing Mitch, JT, and Mo gives us almost 40 millie in cap space this summer.
There are some free agents worth looking at who can be complimentary skill and play better "playoff" hockey than our outgoing forwards (Bennett, Boeser, even Kuzmenko), there are always teams looking to move salary in the summer, maybe Marchand will come and play if we beg him hard enough, etc.
We need an enema and could easily turn over 6-7-8 players off of this team that were mostly passengers when the games got tough. I'm good with that.

You really are trusting management to make smart moves…I mean....Matthews was a shell of himself all year, we played a dogshit brand of hockey all year and we would have ~40M to replace outgoing players with. I'm not too worried about this not being a playoff team next year.
